HLS Podcast: Tide Rolls and the ND Offseason Steamrolls

January 11, 2018 by Ryan Ritter

Folks, the 2017 has officially concluded. In true fashion, the podcast is delayed a day which, of course, brings some of the worst possible news for Notre Dame fans. Plus, winners are announced for the HLS Pick ‘Em. We will take a bit of a break after this episode–mostly to avoid bringing any further terrible news for at least a little while.

About Ryan Ritter

Co-Editor
Texan by birth, Irish by choice.

Born and raised in the great state of Texas, Tex is a first-generation Domer and a former student manager. After graduation, he left the cold winters of South Bend behind and returned back to his home state with a computer engineering degree in tow. Missing the daily grind of working football practices and talking football with fellow Irish fans every day, he took to blogging, a path which eventually led him to Her Loyal Sons. Continuously diving into stats and game film, Tex strives to break down every aspect of Fighting Irish football--even though it's determined to kill him.

I share your background, Ryan–Texan by birth (Freeport) and Domer (didn’t go to school there, but covered them under Joe Doyle when Ara was coach for the SB Tribune). What I’d like to know is what’s the haps with Dexter Williams? Does anyone know the inside story of why he didn’t see the field this year?

There’s been very little information, even from the connected beat, but generally the issue has been two-fold:

      1) He’s been hurt most of the season. Nothing major, but just not 100%.
      2) He can’t pass block (watch the play after his big Citrus Bowl run)

Since there’s a lot of RPO and potential checks to passes in the offense, the concern is that he’s a liability in protection if the correct read is pass. If he can shore up that part of the game, he should see a much, much heavier load.

Thanks, Ryan. That seems to be the official party line too–was hoping you might have other info. I just remember screaming at the screen during the Georgia game to get him in the game… With the right side of the line the way it was, just give him the ball and watch him run. They weren’t going to pass anyway–at least not successfully… Oh, well…
