Wow, I am almost speechless. Okay, that's a total lie, I have plenty to say. And it's all good.
NIGHT GAME AT ND STADIUM!!!! 12 HOUR TAILGATE!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I didn't think this would happen, let alone this coming season. Simply fantastic.
Seriously, I get up at 5:30am to hit campus by 6 to crack the first beer by 6:30am when I attend games now. For USC this year, that means I have HALF A DAY OF TAILGATING AWESOMENESS ahead of me when that first Miller Lite goes down oh-so-smoothly as the sun rises in the east over the glory of the JACC Parking Lot. AH, TAILGATE HEAVEN HOW I LOVE THEE.
I know that some will be worried about people drinking too much. They will. Some will be worried that it will be cold (freezing more likely) and very late when the game ends. Both will happen. And that makes the drinking even more important...gotta stay warm!
But think of the TAILGATING! Hour upon hour of sitting outside, drinking beer, grilling and tossing a football with the family or crew of friends, whoever you prefer to take to Tailgate Heaven. All that time to spend enjoying campus, and getting to see and do all the things that you have to JAM IN when a game starts at 1:30. Now you can stroll across campus, take the fam to see the band step, take in a soccer game, WALK AROUND THE LAKE WOOOOO - all with plenty of time for glorious tailgating on top of it.
And think of the absolute madness that should be ND Stadium after a day like that. Unless the crowd has already lost its collective voice, it should be a romping madhouse. The very-awesome-but-very-quiet senior citizen brigade will be at home staying warm and comfortable - god bless them - and the raving lunatic fringe should be out in force. USC will FEEL the noise from a hostile and well-lubricated Fighting Irish Fanbase, and we will make one thing clear: THE USC REIGN IN THIS RIVALRY IS OVER! ND IS BACK BABY!!!
Now somebody pass me a beer. I have to start training.

If he’s going to be drinking for 12 hours straight, Miller Lite may be all he can afford.

Lite Beer is the smart man’s choice for marathon drinking. Go ahead and try to do a Stone Pale Ale for that amount of time and volume. You’ll die.

I’m gonna hate myself for doing this, but Biscuit is 100% correct on this one. You just can’t drink heavy beers all day and last, you’ll either barkf or pass out or both. I will now pound my head against the wall until I pass out.

My only concern (aside from half the stadium being empty because everyone is already passed out)… is that the campus won’t let people start parking/tailgating until 1pm or something like that (i.e. keep the same amount of tailgating time that you would otherwise have on a normal gameday). Something like “Parking Lots open 6 hours prior to kickoff.” I don’t know if they can/will do that, but it’s a scary thought.

Not a problem. Park just off campus at one of the local houses that rent their front yard. Carry a case around with you as you tour campus. It all works.

Miller Light? (That’s just sad)
How about Harp or Guinness. You know, something Irish! Maybe add some Bailey’s and Jameson and make it an Irish Car Bomb! Now we’re talkin’!!!
GO IRISH! BEAT DOWN $C!!!

I could do 12 hours of Guinness with one or two irish car bombs to help supplement my diet. But I couldn’t do 12 hours of just car bomb’s. I’d die.

Clearly this is a quantity vs. quality issue here. Personally, I’d rather drink fewer quality beers than more cheap-ass ones. Just sayin’.

Guinness is not a strong beer. Why does everyone always think this is the case? I believe it’s ABV is something like 4.3%
12 hours of Guinness is doable. Some people call it “heavy,” but because of the nitrogen as opposed to carbonation I find that I can drink more Guinness than I would be able to consume of a light domestic beer in the same time period.

You Guinness experts, when did they start putting the nitrogen in it? Was it the 90s? I can’t drink the stuff anymore due to that. I don’t understand how anyone drinks nitrogenated beer…absolutely makes me want to retch.

Yea, I totally agree with you on this one. It’s well documented that Kelly is a master of drumming up excitement surrounding his program. I saw it first hand living in Cincinnati while he coached UC. The guy is every bit a politician as much as he is a football coach.
While ND certainly does not lack “excitement” and fan engagement, there are some things (such as night games) that can get people extra fired up for football. I think he’s really trying to get people absolutely jacked about this team (a feeling that has been missing for a while). Good for him.

You are 100% correct about Kelly being a politician, maybe even a “promoter.” Only he could sell out Nippert on a regular basis (overlooking its miniscule capacity). Not sure how many times Butch Jones did it this past season

Not only am i stoked about this game, i will be 21 in time to partake in the festivities!! And not that I am afraid to voice my opinion about Notre Dame let alone USC when i am sober, but I will then be able to do so even louder with a little liquid courage! GO IRISH! i am counting down the days until the season, only 156 more days!

It might be quite pleasant, weatherwise. Mid-October weather is rather variable in South Bend.
But this is a dream come true for NBC. A night game at ND? Ratings bonanza.
BTW, the 4 PM start for the BC game is due to NBC’s coverage of the President’s Cup golf matches. Now THAT will be a cold evening.

Just listening to the Blue & Gold Huddle radio show on the interweb – your fears (hopes?) that the older crowd will stay home are confirmed. While I totally respect Tony Roberts & Roger Valdiserri, they are both bellyaching about the night game. Things along the lines of “this shows absolutely no concern for the fans” and “the priority of the fans’ concerns is moved to the back, like way to the back of the bus”.
So yeah, we should be able to expect much fewer “Down in front!”, “Sit down!” screams from the octogenarians we see so much at Rock’s House.

Do we have any idea what ABC/ESPN game(s) we’ll be up against that day? Obviously all the ND fans are going to watch (and there are many), but if there’s not a great game on opposite us then the ratings will be even better!
