Friday Roundup: The “This Is What It Was Like” Edition

Last night I was traveling home from Chicago. As I arrived in the Mid-Atlantic, I quickly took a look at twitter. Jimmer, for BYU, had apparently just scored a shot from somewhere in the rafters, and the masses were going wild. Meanwhile, UConn's Kemba Walker was was doing his best Jordan impression. And all the while, dozens of folks I follow on Twitter were eating it all up. The excitement was tangible. These 2 exciting, important games were being played at the exact same time, and rather than taking away from either even, the 2 found this synergy of entertainment and excitement that benefitted the fans (and thus the sport of college basketball) tremendously.

It's time for the BCS to play the BCS bowl games on the same day.

Again.

Like it was before they wrecked it.

The Roundup

Okay. Thank you. Now please go back to doing... whatever it is you usually do. Ralph Nader has decided it's time to eliminate athletic scholarships. Which may serve as an example for everyone why the nation doesn't tend to let him actually decide anything.

Someone's Looking For Fulmer Cup Status A Little Early! The nation's former #1 recruit (see how quickly that title vanishes, kid?) was in an encounter with police in Columbia, SC last night. Apparently no charges were filed. And he's 18, and at least when I was 18, you could go into a bar. So there's really no story here, but there is a picture. A horribly blurry, grainy picture of someone who may be Jadeveon Clowney being temporarily detained by people who may be police officers. Um... moving on...

HAHAHAHAHA! NERDS! Hey, Nerds, go look in a mirror and check out all the nerds! NERDS! Florida has a Quidditch team. Too. The one thing that makes me really curious about this: How do so many people who've clearly never played any competitive sports in their entire life comprehend things like "rules of competition?" Nerds.

This is almost certainly a bad idea, so let's do it. Subway Domer's thrown up (ahem) a podcast. It's titled "Where Have You Gone Michael Floyd?" I've not listened to it. That wont stop me from linking it. But I'll bet there's cussing.

It's like I was in the time capsule As I mentioned, I was on a business trip this week, so it's as if I didn't exist in your world. Did you guys know Liz Taylor was still alive? Until like Monday? Anyway, Spring Football also started, and Brian Kelly said some stuff. I'm still totally floored that Liz Taylor was still among us.

And That's How A College Football Coach and a Nobel Peace Prize Winner Found They Had Something In Common Lou Holtz is getting his Notre Dame degree. So too are some other folks, like an Iranian lawyer who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003. She was the first woman justice to ever serve in the Iranian justice system. So I guess I can forget about achieving that goal.

The Beer

Hey, here's a way to enjoy some very good beer and help out the folks in Japan in a small way: Buy and drink anything by Hitachino Nest. For starters, the beer is made by a Japanese brewery, so it's supportive of their efforts. For another, I've sampled a number of their brews, and I've enjoyed them all, and for another, they've stopped brewing their beer for now so they can bottle filtered water for Japan. And for another, some importers of the brew are passing any and all profits they make on the beers back to Japan in the form of various donations.

Also, they've got this kick-ass owl logo.
