8 Games Was Enough

Yeah, 2 of USC's wins have been stricken from the record books. Yeah, the Bush Push was actually an illegal play and it never should've counted. But, fact remains that for 8 games in a row, ND hadn't beaten SC.

8 games. 8 seasons of Notre Dame football. Almost my entire 20's.

It's over. The mother&^$@ing streak is OVER!!!!!. I cannot describe how happy I am that we beat SC. Forget that we tried to give them the game over and over. Forget the mistakes or that they dropped an easy pass. We gave them the ball in our own 30 three times and STILL won the game. We wont it through great defense, a tough mentality, and coming together as a team. This is Notre Dame football. This is the Fighting Irish!

A few thoughts on the game and the team...

1) Tailgating was fun. Yeah, got a few boos here and there, but generally folks just kind of ignored us ND fans. I tailgated on campus and tied on a wicked buzz after arriving at 8 am to get started. Some might say 9 hours of pre-game is excessive. Not for ND-USC.

2) Whatever weather report I read (and I wish I could remember where I saw it) totally sucked balls. I looked right at my rain gear and said 'eh, won't need that - it says 0% chance of rain'. WRONG. Freaking rained all over us. When will the sunny come back in sunny southern california I wonder?

3) This defense improved immensely as the season progressed. And yesterday, they put on a clinic. ND held USC to 261 total yards, well below their season average, and stopped the Cheaters time and again in the red zone. The D also held USC to only 80 yards rushing, a key to the game given the wet weather. Another great stat: USC was only 4 of 17 on 3rd downs. What a performance!

The night before the game I popped in a hotel here in my 'hood to pick up a friend's cell phone and saw an Irish Player walk by. I asked the bell hop if the team was staying there and he said 'I don't know'. Then I saw Coach Diaco walk by. As he passed, with his perfectly parted hair and slightly lost look on his face, I thought 'The Loyal Sons got your back, Bob'. And man, that guy has DEVELOPED a defense. Very proud of the D, and glad to have Coach D teaching them. He's had some 'ooops' moments, but no one can say that this defense hasn't progressed.

We're a top 30 Defense at this point, and better at Scoring than yards. 'Bend, dont break' has really been implemented with the Irish. ND went 13 quarters without giving up a Touchdown, and it took a turnover at the Notre Dame 10, and 4 tries from the Irish 1 to make that happen. this D is stout, and doesn't give up TDs easily. We've also shown vast improvement.

Here's the game by game total yards and total TDs given up by the Irish.

322 yards/1 TD, 532/4, 461/5, 404/4, 315/1, 382/2, 314/2, 363/5, 399/1, 265/0, 174/0, 296/1.

Of course quality of opponent will dictate some of this, but it's interesting to split this up into 1/4s and see the trends.

Q1: 438 / 3.3
Q2: 367 / 2.3
Q3: 359 / 2.7
Q4: 245 / 0.3

So we went from giving up 438 yards a game in the first quarter of the season, to 245. And from 3.3 TDs per game to .3. We reduced average yardage by almost 200 (almost 50%) and reduced TDs by 3 (roughly 90%!). That's some SERIOUS improvement. And our best quarter came against, arguably, some of the best competition we faced in Utah and USC. Really, really great trends on the defensive side of the ball.

4) I was really bumming out in the 3rd Quarter when we just continued to give USC short fields. It was obvious that they simply COULD NOT put together a long drive against us, yet we just kept giving them the ball with super-short fields. USC fans will point to the drop and say 'see, we should have won'. Well, I point to all those TOs in our own end of the field and say 'we avoid one of those, and it's not even a game'. Those turnovers could have, and very well should have, killed this game for us. But this time, this year, it was meant to be. A Lane Kiffin-coached cheater of a program got its Irish comeuppance, finally. I think that chart I referred you all to the other day is about to flip, and I anticipate Irish domination of this series the next few years, especially as the NCAA recruiting penalties kick in.

5) ND fans can be just as crappy/annoying as any other fan. To the dude behind me with the fu man chu mustache: No, the coach shouldn't bail on every single player every time he doesn't make a perfect play. No, you cannot make play calls. No, that was not Nickel. No, no no! Every single one of your ideas/comments was stupid and moronic and annoying. Every other fan there as clueless as you just yelled and cheered yet you INSISTED on 'calling the game' for 4 hours straight? WTF?

6) Despite that one dude, the Irish Faithful were out there in pretty good force yesterday, and I must say that we breed a tougher/more dedicated fan than USC. USC fans clearly outnumbered ND at kickoff (duh). But as the rain came out and the game got tough, we started to see fans leaving for the cover of the building. 99 out of 100 were USC fans, and by the time folks had stopped their mass exodus, I would put the stadium at 50/50 Irish to USC fans. It was, essentially, a neutral site game in the 4th quarter, when the game was most on the line. And we were loud. You could hear the HUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHEEEEES when Robert plowed through USC Dlinemen. The defensive stands were assisted with a lot of crowd noise.

It was great to see Irish fans stick through the crappy (it's all relative - this was balmy compared to S. Bend) weather and give ND a boost when it was needed. And it was great to celebrate with everyone after the game.

Very happy for the program, team and fans. Very happy for the seniors, and especially Robert Hughes who played a major role in getting his first win over USC (see him receive the game ball at www.und.com/allaccess), and very happy with the direction of this program.

7) Even with really bad losses to Tulsa and Navy, and close losses to MSU and UM, this program is headed in the right direction. Undefeated in November. A defense that's looking stronger and stronger. A fight in the team despite losing a lot of key guys to injury, and despite a few weeks where everything seemed dark, bleak, and hopeless. The Irish are now ranked 29 according to Sagarin, after having faced the 22nd most difficult schedule. Not bad for a first year in a new program given all the injuries we've had. And it's clear that with a few tweaks to our approach, and a few bounces, this team could very easily have 2 more wins. But all in all, 7-5 isn't so horrible given how the season played out.

Now, off to a bowl game to finish 8-5, and something more to build on. Let's Go Irish!
