NFL Network Draft "Guru," Mike Mayock, was named as the new color guy for NBC ND Home Games.
In terms of Football Credentials, he was a safety for the NY Giants for 2 years, and before that was captain of his football team at Boston College.
Here's a link to his critique of Jimmy Clausen's pro day.
And here's a video of Mayock trying to explain something football-related to the general public.
...and I can't explain it, but there's already something sort of grating about his voice. We'll see how this goes.

Is NBC doing this on purpose???? First a USC guy now a BC guy…ridiculous.

In a sense, yes, it’s on purpose. They can’t take a ND guy because then the other half of the audience who watches, hoping for the Irish to fail, would be annoyed and might actually go away. You’ll tune in even though you may not like the color guy.

Very positive in his opinions of Clasusen and Tate, maybe he’s not a “hater”.

no matter what, they needed to replace the entire ‘team’. When Haden went, they should’ve started new, clean slate. This dude may be just fine, but the other half will still be terrible.

I’d give Tom Hammond a solid “okay” grade.

I have to disagree – there was a time last season when the ball was clearly rolling around on the field after an incomplete pass and the man was talking about an interception. Between his simply not knowing what’s going on and his mixing up players’ numbers, I find him painful to listen to. If the radio weren’t 2 seconds ahead of the NBC broadcast, I would mute the TV every time (instead of just some of the time) to avoid his play-by-play.

“Did he actually, literally spike it?”
– Keith Jackson.
Can’t be as bad as Mr. Jackson in his twilight years.

I agree Hammond is awful, but I think we’re stuck with him under contract for quite a while.

I think the “grating” to which you are referring is prevalent among the former jocks that are so often announcers and analysts today. He’s GOT to say fewer stupid things than Pat Haden.

I dont mind the non-ND ties because, domer u make a good point, that makes an already biased broadcast even more so and possibly off putting for non-domers. But does it have to be someone so BLATANTLY anti-ND? first, it was our biggest rival, now its an alumn of a school where we know everyone is bitter about not getting into ND

I think you should watch the video of his critique of Clausen/Tate. I don’t think he’s gonna let his personal leanings get in the way of a good broadcast.

I’d be fine with them if they put Criqui in the booth to call the TV broadcast. This would free up the radio broadcast for Tony Roberts to come back, and I could either listen to the radio again while watching the game or the TV broadcast (I like Criqui).

“”I’m a Catholic kid from Philly,” said Mike Mayock, NBC Sports’ recently anointed color analyst for ND home telecasts. “I’m still (steamed) at Notre Dame for not offering me a scholarship out of high school.”
—Exactly what I was talking about…
