Im pretty apathetic about it. Could be worse, I guess. Could be an extension with WMU or Rutgers or some crap. At least it’s a fairly decent BCS team. I DO hate that they and ABCESPNDISNEY thinks theyre a rival though.

There’s a lot of debate over whether or not Backup College is our “rival”. Many point to BC’s lack of football history and traditional role as “little brother” as evidence that this is not indeed a rivalry. I used to be in this camp, but I think the simple fact that we are the only two Catholic schools in I-A makes this a rivalry by default. Besides Stanford and maybe the academies, BC is the best academic school we play (Muck Fichigan), it’s a small Catholic school with a lot of cross-applicants, and it’s a matchup I want to see played every year (I say this as a lifelong Midwesterner). They’re not USC, they not Michigan (sucks), but neither is Navy. Yes, we have 100 billion ‘rivals’ but I have to think that alongside USC, Fichigan, Fichigan St., Navy, Purdon’t, and Stanford that BC is one of those teams I expect us to play (and beat) every year. Glad to see this RIVALRY continuing so we can pummel those ND rejects some more.

Big Red, I like it too. I have a strict definition of rival (that there can only be 1), but the rest I agree with 100%.

My definition if a rival naturally precludes BC from our list. To be a rival, you must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. Mutual hatred(Michigan(sux))
2. Traditionally, multiple huge gms vs one another(U$C)
3. Undying respect, pride driving rivalry(Navy)

BC is a rival, there’s no two-ways around it as far as I’m concerned.
Two things that stick out in my mind with this announcement:
1. It’s another pro-Independence move. I’d like to see more and more series’ signed with other teams. We still have to finish the extension with Michigan, no? It would be nice to add a series with an ACC school or someone we don’t usually play.
2. The series is much too close to stop playing. It is currently 10-9-0 in favor of the Irish…too close for comfort. I’m not really into bashing our rivals, especially BC. Maybe it’s the hockey fan in me or something…but we can’t really talk shit when they’ve won 7 out of the last 9 games.
I’d like to see Kelly string together a nice winning streak against them. That would be nice.
