Yeah, I know Ty has been gone forever, and is out of coaching and all that, but this is just too direct of a comparison to not make it...
Perhaps the most impacting function, though, is the one Kelly penciled in himself - an impromptu date recently at the driving range of ND's Warren Golf Course with a group of Irish football players.
“They were talking big about how good of golfers they were, and I called them on it,” Kelly said of the likes of Braxston Cave, Mike Golic Jr., Chris Stewart, Kyle Rudolph and Jake Golic.
“We were there about an hour hitting golf balls, laughing at each other about how bad our golf swings were, and me being thankful that we didn't have good golf swings.”
You see, Kelly does connect the dots between a mediocre golf game and progress on the football field.
“That's why I had to ride (Jake) Golic a little bit,” Kelly said of the sophomore backup tight end. “I told him he was a little too good.”
Kelly wants his guys good at football. And academics. That's it.
That's right.

I might suggest that this was not lost on Coach Kelly either. He is a student of Notre Dame history and I would be shocked if he was not fully aware of Ty working so hard on his golf game in lieu of recruiting or developing his team. I see significant, and possibly very intentional, symbolism in this story.

BK is from MASS. I am from MASS. We MASS guys don’t tolerate the BS. We MASS guys WIN AT ND. It’s really that simple.
