After 2 sub-.500 seasons, and with ND finally having a competent coach that has actually coached, and won consistently, in college, the Skunkbears are trying to back away from a commitment to play the Irish for the next bajillion years.
"We don't have a contract right now," Brandon said. "We announced that we had reached a meeting of the minds for a 20-year extension with the potential of a two-year hiatus, but that was never codified into a contract."
Translation:
"Me just a widdle guy and me no want to face the big bad Irish guys anymore."
Pansies.
Don't try to go running away now, Skunkbears. "I wasn't here then." "I was handed this." Whatever. We're cool with a handshake to show up and whoop your boys. Quit trying to get out of it.
Note: Yes, I know we lost last year. That does not change a thing. Just like the fact that we won the year before that is irrelevant. Or what happened 20 games ago is irrelevant.
