This thing deserves a rant. DMQ put it out there, and put his light stamp of disapproval in his post.
I am going to take it a bit further.
WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU THINKING NOTRE DAME? And I’m NOT talking about the fans or the alums or even the students. I’m talking about the FOLKS THAT ARE SOMEHOW IN CHARGE OF THE UNIVERSITY THAT THINK ITS A GOOD IDEA TO CREATE THE CHEESIEST, LAMEST, FAKEST PIECE OF GARBAGE PUFF PIECE VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN.
Really? This is what you think the fans want? DO YOU THINK THIS MAKES US RELEVANT? NO. It’s just going to be one huge joke, at the school’s expense. To clarify, I don’t think that’s really that big of a deal. Some folks on the interwebs will mock it, and eventually it will be forgotten.
But here’s the thing: THEY COULD’VE MADE SOMETHING ACTUALLY GOOD. Instead they spent time, money and effort on something that resembles a steaming pile of internet video turd. Instead they aimed to be lamer than a bunch of PSU fans singing Miley Cyrus. And they succeeded.
THIS IS JUST A FREAKING JOKE. Marketing and Brand and PR are about authenticity and addressing a target. “ND” (meaning those in charge of this kind of garbage) are trying to be ‘hip’ and ‘young’ with this kind of crap. Guess what folks? It’s not FREAKING WORKING. Why? 1) Because you have no idea what ‘hip’ is and 2) Because ND shouldn’t be chasing down people/ideas that MAKE NO SENSE.
Lord.
If I’m a student studying marketing at ND, I have to look at this and say “Do any of my professors have any clue about marketing? If so, why weren’t they consulted on this? And if they were consulted, I’m transferring IMMEDIATELY.” We’re an institution with BILLIONS on-hand, no lack of intellectual and creative resources, and we come up with THIS.
F.
Please, the next time some agency pitches you a freaking MUSIC VIDEO STARRING CHEESY DUDES IN BIG HATS THAT SING “we are the fans of Notre Dame” TO A LAME, RIPPED OFF BEAT, tell them “No thanks”.
Please????? I said PLEASE SO FOR GOD’S SAKE STOP BEING IDIOTS.

It’s a little odd that this would come from the University who’s alumni/fans openly oppose a jumbotron, jock rock, or astro turf in their stadium, and who proudly stick with their classic, understated uniforms and gold helmets. How could they think this beyond-cheesy, pop in the worst sense of the word, promo video would be well received?
Your rants, per usual, are over the top. But on this one, I got to say, I agree with you.
I donno, outside of the music, this isnt nsarly as bad as you’re making it out to be. I have 0 problem with the admin trying to brand us as a bit more modern. The only negative i have on the thing is, you shpild have demanded right of first refusal when you say the result. Music is crap, band sux, but the images and general idea was great.
yes, i hope to god they take that crap down before its too late. what an epic embarrassment to the university, alumni, fans and student athletes.
If other projects are any indication, the people who the university retains full-time to be experts on a subject are in no way consulted by the people responsible for particular projects. When was the last time one of our fantastic Architecture professors actually designed a building built on campus? It has to be decades. And the university has about 15 fight songs; we don’t need a pop-music version of yet another one. This says: we’re just like everyone else, except our weather is worse.
Abysmal. As if we haven’t been enough of a joke lately, now this.
No redeeming qualities whatsoever. No credit for effort. It just sucks.
Nice… Parliament Whiteadelic.
I know Funk isn’t for everyone, but the music isn’t bad. The production values are pretty good compared to what comes out of some of the state schools in the Big 10 and SEC. It’s too long. But my major beef is that the whole ting just a stupid, stupid idea. Executed competently, but dumb, really dumb.
The thing I can’t believe is that ND goes from featuring the band in the Ok Go video to this disaster. Talk about range.
This video is so freaking sad; I am stunned!
Glad to see this reaction. I’m typically impressed and, well, a bit envious at how effective ND is at protecting its brand–easily the no. 1 brand in college sports.
You are right to come down on this with both feet. It’s really, really bad.
I was holding out hope that it was some group of BC fans trying to make us look bad. Ugh. At least there are some improved versions floating around: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4IqMdAWM9s
