Ty Willingham Gets Paid Millions of Dollars Per Year? To WHAT?!!??!?!

The Biscuit

Well, we knew it wouldn’t take long.  Wouldn’t take Ty long to find a respectable position where he could use his vast golf knowledge in a new and challenging role.  A role that is worthy of his history, that would vindicate the hiring of Tyrone at ND (and at UW), despite all his horrible, terrible, ridiculously bad failures

We knew this would happen, and it has:

San Francisco (UFL): We hear head coach Denny Green has just about completed his staff.  Former Central Florida head coach Mike Kruczek has joined the staff at offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach.  We hear Charles Collins will serve as the wide receivers coach. Trent Walters will serve as the defensive coordinator / defensive backs coach.  We hear Trent Bray will coach the linebackers and former Arizona Cardinals defensive line coach Larry Brooks will coach the defensive line.   As we reported earlier, Art Kehoe is the new offensive line coach.  Tyrone Willingham will coach the special teams & running backs.

That’s it, that’s the bottom of the barrel.  The end of the line.  This nails it, once and for all, that ND made a horrible decision in hiring Ty.  If a oh-fer season at UW wasnt enough this is it.   First, Ty was hired on to coach in the U-freaking-F-L.   This means nobody in the NFL wanted him, nobody in the college ranks, D1 to D17 wanted him, and no decent high school programs wanted him.  What’s more, he’s in charge of special teams and running backs at the SF branch of the please-please-let-us-not-be-the-NBA-D-league UFL.  Not a coordinator, not a head coach.  He’s Polian at ND – the equivalent of an up and comer that’s very young and very hungry.  Not the equivalent of the head coach of one of the top football schools in the nation.   THIS is what puts the nail in the coffin of Ty’s career, and indicts White and Monk and all those that orchestrated his hiring in the first place.

If you’d told me that we’d ever, ever see a former ND Head Coach coaching as a ST and RB assistant in the freaking UFL in my lifetime, I’d have said the world must’ve ended, bc NO WAY ND would ever make the mistake of hiring a dude that could end up in a place like that.  Guess I was wrong.   This is like seeing A-Rod sweeping out the dugouts in your local t-ball league to stay close to the game.  This is like Mike Tyson offering up free swings to his tiger-cat-tattoo’d face for $5 a pop.   This is like OJ. (not in the double-murder way, in the dropping from the top to the bottom way).  This is like Ford, Chrysler, and GM.  This is Mickey Rourke before The Wrestler.   This is an unparalleled plummet.  A long, deep, painful fall.   Ouch.

Craziest part?  Ty has been collecting bajillions of dollars from ND since he left, and he’s still collecting from UW too.  So no matter what he does next – he could be the freaking water boy in the UFL (which is about the only position below his) and he’d STILL be a rich mother.  All for being absolutely terrible at his job.

Go work on your Putts, Ty.   Go work on your Putts.

Why in the world wouldn’t he just go away and count his money? Or take some gig at espn or go coach high school kids and trot out some old cliches about giving back to the game that has given him so much? I actually feel bad for the guy, and that’s saying a lot given what he put ND through. It also never ceases to amaze me that these head coaches are willing to hire a bunch of failed coaches as assistants. It’s almost as if they want to be surrounded by re-treads that are more pathetic than themselves to protect their egos. Not to mention that somebody gave “they were what we thought they were” Denny Green a head coaching gig in the first place.

SD, totally agree. If i were him I’d be at my beach house in the bahamas half the year and at my beach house in Australia the other half, with a few trips to my beach house in the Mediterranean here and there to spice things up.
