RichRod Can REALLY Get those QBs Going…

The Biscuit

to other schools. zing!

After losing top-ranked QB Ryan Mallet a little over a year ago, RR has lost his only other “real” QB with the transfer of Steven Threet.

“I’ve decided to transfer from the University of Michigan,” Threet recited from a prepared statement during a telephone conversation Sunday. “I have requested and received my release. I do not yet know where I will continue my collegiate career and will have no further comment until that decision is made.”

Course, the skunkbears bring in 2 ‘dual threat’ QBs as frosh this year, so I’m sure that one of those 2 will start when ND whomps them again this Fall.

So much for RR being able to ‘adjust the system’ to fit any style of QB. We all knew those lines were a bunch of BS, much like 99% of everything RR says, but it’s nice to see that proven to be the case. RR’s offense is a somewhat advanced high school scheme without a Pat White, so this isn’t much of a shock.

Good luck Threet. Great choice.

It was somewhat comforting to see UM(s!) totally disintegrate like we did a few years ago last season. But it’ll still be even sweeter to see them mired in similar, if not worse, fetid competition for years to come. Boy, that 4 million dollar buyout plus exorbitant contract will REALLY be worth it, huh?

Oh good, we’re back to the usual topics: RR is the devil, UM is worse than ND, etc.

My take on this is simple, UM had the worst QB tandem in pretty much the entire NCAA last year. As a UM fan, I would have traded with any team for their top 2 QB’s. This was not a case of RR not being able to adapt to his QB’s strengths, they frankly had none. Threet and Sheridan seem like great kids and good role models but they had absolutely no business starting for UM last year or any other year.

To see RR adapt his system to his QB’s strengths, I would consider these examples:
Shaun King: At Tulane, Shaun King set the NCAA record for pass efficiency, his OC at the time RR. Shaun King was definitely not what I would call a run first QB.
Woody Dantzler: First QB to ever throw for 2000 and rush for 1000 in a season, his OC at the time RR.
Pat White: Yeah, he ran a run first system with Pat White but then Pat White may have been one the all time best runners from the QB position, definitely top 5.

Losing Threet could turn out to be a loss but the upside is that now UM can move forward with QB’s that are a better fit (that is to say, more talented).

Trey, I think that 4MM is chump change compared to the 30MM ND has invested with Weis. How’s that working out for ya?

2 BCS, 2 poor years filling the hopper and we’ll see next year. At least we have 2 years of plus to show which is 2 years more than Michigan, That’s how it’s going. You got more of the same comming newxt year. We already learned what it means to start a freshman at QB. But we understand going to Michigan, you’re a little slower learning.

DTK, you guys are f-ed again next year unless one of the 2 new frosh are Pryor clones, and they’re not. Besides, you guys suck.

Biscuit, UM may very well again be “f-ed” as you so elegantly put it. However, my larger point was that this is, IMO, not really much of a loss. Threet is not really all that good, I don’t see how a true FR could be worse at this point. I don’t expect eiher to be a Proyor clone, although I would love Minor to step up ala Beanie Wells and take a ton of pressure off.

DTK, that’s the same rationalization I would use. He wasn’t that good granted, but he also faced some injuries and had to learn a whole system this year. But Threet at the least would’ve been able to help take some of the pressure off the Frosh, and/or provide a buffer for them as the season starts. Granted, you’re facing all the Michigans (sucks!), both east and west, and freaking Delaware State to start off the year, so that’s probably all the cushion they need. I think come September you’ll think it was a bigger loss than you do today.

Damn, Jim stole my comeback before I could read DTK’s rambling. Hmm, what can I use now…oh, here we go: DTK, you suck!

Lol.
