Really?
The Biscuit - 1:50 am
So this is our National Champion? Florida? Really?
I mean, FREAKING REALLY?
After a season with so much competition, so many close games, a lot of great talent and a lot of great moments, we’re forced to settle with the Gators as our MNC? This is freaking preposterous.
The “best” team in the nation lost to Ole Miss. They lost to a team that lost to Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, South Carolina AND straw-man-team Alabama.
I’m not saying that UF didn’t deserve to be in the conversation. Any one-loss team in the Top 10 or so, plus Utah, deserved to be in that discussion. But really, does anyone other than Gator fans feel like this is ‘right’? This feels even more broken than years when there have been undefeated teams from ‘major’ BCS conferences left out of the NC. It’s starting to piss me off.
And it’s not just because I think Urban Meyer and Florida completely suck. Yes yes – they don’t care for student-athletes and they don’t care for education of student-athletes. But that’s not why I’m pissed. I’m pissed because the system just doesn’t make sense. It’s amazingly arbitrary, and is so influenced by pre-season rankings, which are completely random shots in the dark, it’s amazing.
Is UF the NC? I don’t think so. Do I know who is? Nope. Do I care? Hell yes.
A playoff is needed. Top 8 BCS teams, duke it out.
It’s the only way .

I’m an anti-playoff advocate and wish we could go back to the old jumbled-up system (OJUS), but nevertheless 2008 USC in a championship game against any other team in the country would have been over with by halftime. I’m actually stunned the AP poll was unanimous.

Why would anyone ever think that a playoff would work in college football? It would ruin the regular season. Have you ever watched March Madness or the College World Series? Complete failures, no one even pays attention. The NFL playoffs and Superbowl? Big waste of time, I wonder why they even televise them, it’s all about the regular season. I think once a college football team loses two games, they should cancel the rest of the season because at that point all the drama is gone right? That’s what makes the regular season so special, knowing that there is a one in a million chance that your team will actually get selected to play in a mythical national championship game–and then having those odds drop to zero by the end of October–that’s priceless. Don’t change a thing.

Really SD? If ND had a chance to fight their way into the Top 8 to be in a Playoff against the other Top 7 teams in the country, you wouldn’t be interested in watching them in the regular season trying to accomplish that? And besides, an 8-team playoff only accounts for 7 games. There were 32 bowls this year. Plenty of room for other unimportant matchups to take place. In this scenario, all you want still holds true. If you lose 2 games, you could still have that 1 in a million chance to make it to the 8-game playoff that gives you an even better shot at the MNC game. And those odds can drop to 0 in November too. You get all the good, with a few more really good matchups at the end of the year, and I dont see where it’s worse.

Sorry Biscuit. My attempt at sarcastic humor failed miserably. Yes, a playoff system would be a huge improvement. I would even be in favor of a Plus 1 or even a four team format.

Don’t worry about it, SD. Biscuit’s been drunk for the last 48 hours. Thus all the funny on the site today.

Good for Biscuit. After remaining calm and rationale during the past four months he deserves to blow off some steam.

ah, I see SD. i was pretty surprised that you’d disagreed since you seem so logical. but you can’t really blame me – there are a ton of people that actually believe the position that you posted sarcastically!

I know, it occurred to me as I wrote it that it’s not easy to mock someone whose position is so ridiculous to begin with.
I’ve only been lucky enough to attend one march madness game. It was Stanford vs. St. Joe’s in San Diego and about 60 percent of the fans weren’t really fans of either school but just there to see a good game. But the arena was packed and the fans spent most of the game on their feet because the teams were good and the game compelling. It’s hard to imagine why the NCAA and schools wouldn’t want football teams and fans to have the same experience.
