Coach Oliver Fired Resigns

Well, I have to say that I didn’t really expect this.
Defensive line coach Jappy Oliver was fired Thursday after four seasons under Weis, two sources close to the team have confirmed.Defensive line coach Jappy Oliver is out after four seasons under Weis, Notre Dame football spokesman Brian Hardin confirmed Thursday. Hardin said Oliver “resigned to pursue other career opportunities.”
Of the coaching changes that have occurred this off-season, I wasn’t really looking at Coach Jappy Oliver. While DL recruiting has been a rather difficult proposition in Weis’ 4 years, I felt Oliver was getting quite a lot out of the talent on hand. (And I’ve got my own Freakonomics-esque theory about why ND has a hard time recruiting at DL.)
Obviously, if you’re a regular reader, you can guess that I’m less than thrilled that Jappy’s firing is the first we’re hearing about. I’m not crushed that he’s gone, but I’m a little confused why we’re not hearing about someone else first.
Good Luck to Coach Oliver in the future.

ND has a coach named Jappy on staff? How am I just hearing about this now? Certainly could not have helped efforts in recruing kids with any type of Asian background.
Perhaps this is just the beginning of it, more to follow.
Dang. We’re missing out on the Asian football player market?
my guess on the order is that he’s not a big recruiter. little danger of losing anyone because of the move. other changes, if/when they occur, will likely be made post-signing day. charlie’s desire to wait until after signing day last year to make any moves at all points to his concern for continuity in the recruiting process. i actually like it as it helps keep the class intact, although it may make any moves later more difficult as good candidates take other jobs. but my guess is that he’s lining things up in the background, and will make the changes official post-signing. or, i could be totally wrong. likely 50/50 there.
Isn’t it pronounced “yappy?” I figured it was more insulting to small dogs.
I don’t get the impression that the assistant coaches leaving have too big an impact on incoming players. When Haywood left, none of the offensive recruits seemed concerned–at least not publicly–I guess we won’t know for sure until signing day. Having said that, it’s probably smart to wait just in case.
Depends on the coach. Brown leaving would probably have an impact.
what I understand is that he was not highly thought of by prospects. His geography may not have been high yield locations, but the buzz is that in other areas, he was not an incentve to recruits. Don’t know.
I’m not concerned on the order of replacing assistants. It doesn’t have to be in order of priority. With any change there are other factors that are considered. ie contract dissolution/restructuring, availability of replacements etc…
Latina next please.
Thank goodness Jappy is gone. Where did you have to look when the Irish let it go to Syracuse, etc. and could not stop anyone in the second half. He was not a quality coach. Just look at Justin Tuck! You had one of the best DL and it took a N.Y. Giant Coach to get it out of him!
