Absurd Amounts of Awesome in Honor of Manti Te’o
The Biscuit
Manti, you are wanted at Notre Dame.

My new favorite person is the dude that came up with the idea, and somehow funded it: a shipment of 8,000 Hawaiian Lei’s to be delivered to a dorm room, to be handed out at the ‘Cuse game this weekend. Just to show Manti some good old-fashioned Irish Island love.
Awesome. Here’s the note from the boy-genius that came up with the idea.
A Call to Other ND Students – Need Help With The Lei’s
Alright, so it seems I’ll be receiving a huge box of about 8000 lei’s to my dorm room in Duncan on Thursday. Unfortunately, this really isn’t a good weekend for me to sit outside the Stadium and hand out lei’s. I have literally 23 buddies from home coming in town for the game and have already bought a parking pass in the Joyce lot to tailgate. Had Manti visited for the Pitt weekend, I wouldve been willing to stand outside Gate E all day handing out these lei’s, but unfortunately I have some other obligations for this weekend. That and it’ll be my last home gameday at ND as a student, so I’m not sure I want to stand outside the Stadium all day.
So if anyone can help out this Saturday handing out lei’s, please email me at mkearne2 at the nd.edu. I’ll be able to work Gate E for part of the day but I’ll definitely need a bunch of help. Also, if anyone knows some writers at the Observer that could write about this whole thing in the newspaper this week, that’d be awesome. Posting this on NDnation would also be a good idea since a lot of students post on that message board, but I dont have a name over there. Thanks!

“Brilliant!” And a golf clap.
If you’ll be at the game and are so inclined to take part in such awesomeness, drop the kid a note at the email address above. If you’re even more inclined to be awesomer-er, buy some Lei’s yourself and wear/bring them, and hand them out. Let’s turn 8,000 to 20,000 by Saturday, and get this unique Hawaiian talent to bring his island mojo to the Bend.

My how Notre Dame has changed! When I was getting my BA (Philosophy’70), there were no women students, and nobody ever got lei’d.
Of course, this is a potential NCAA violation, with the following statement from the university: Yours is not the first question our office has received regarding this issue. As you can see from the below e-mail communication from our assistant athletics director for compliance, Lisa Deibler to another student on-campus, you may not do anything that will publicize a prospective student-athlete’s visit to our campus. The wearing of lei’s, Hawaiian shirts, or the placement of signs welcoming a particular prospective student-athlete to a game/campus, is not permissible and could seriously jeopardize that prospective student-athlete’s opportunity to attend Notre Dame should he/she decide to do so. Bottom line, an institution may not permit any “publicity” of a prospect being on its campus. What you had planned to do would most definitely be considered publicity and could result in NCAA sanctions. As a result, you are advised to not move forward with your plans.
Thank you for contacting me. Protecting the eligibility of the prospect’s visiting our campus is of great importance and I wouldn’t want the actions of our students (or any other group) to cause problems.

I was pretty pumped about that idea, sucks we can’t make it a reality. Go Irish!!!
Too bad the next week we play SC. They’ll of course have 20,000 lei’s (U know how easy Southern Cal girls are). Te’O has offers there too!
Great idea, but the violation and way it looks scare me, but not as much as the 4th quarter does.

Ah, that makes sense. I was wondering if it’d be considered legit. Ah well, wonder what the kid will do with 8,000 Lei’s? DORM PARTY!!!! I’LL GET THE NATTY LIGHT!
This is no different than when LeSean McCoy checked the box on the sign at that Pitt game. If the students take these actions on their own the school would be in no trouble. What the lay person does not normally understand is that schools self-report violations all the time. Most penalties handed out by the NCAA are not taking away bowl games or limiting scholorships, but are minor penalties. The real mistake here was scrubbing it through the school first. Now no one can plead ignorance to the rule. Had someone just passed out lei’s, Hawaiian shirt’s, or made signs, and not known about this rule, the penalties would be little to none. However, now that the cat is out of the bag, the penalty could be more severe. Everyone comes down on the NCAA, but in cases such as this they are usually pretty level-headed. How many signs in how many towns do you see promoting a recruits visit to their school? In the words of Jim Rome: War smart students trying to abide by the rules.
Also, is Manti still coming? Thought I read something on Rivals about their state championship being this weekend.
