Mark, it was. And ND wouldn't have been either A) in position to decisively beat UNC after the 1st half or B) in position to win at all without Clausen. This isn't meant as a post to blame Clausen. When I think he looked sloppy, I think the team looked sloppy. Who knows, maybe the cadence/audible on the 2nd pick was rushed because it took the OL too long to huddle or get up to the LOS. Maybe it took too long for the call to come in from the sideline. Maybe it took too long for the WRs to line up pre-snap. Either way, it looked sloppy.

Jimmy's long TD pass to Tate (I think it was Tate - the one to the left corner of the endzone) was a thing of beauty and a sign of his continued improvement. He has thrown the fade/deep fade so many times to Tate and Floyd (with great results), but that pass was a pretty low arc type of pass that we haven't seen very often.

Same rule applies in baseball, actually. If a fly ball goes into the fielder's mitt, he can run 10-feet and fall to the ground. If the ball pops out, it is not a valid catch because in the continuation of the act, he didn't maintain posession.

I wanted to read this post, but I'm still so bitter and frustrated about the whole thing that I cant gather the courage to do so. Matt, in answer to your question, it is the definition of a "Catch" that caused that to be ruled incomplete. It's not enough that you gain posession of the ball and have a foot in bounds to be awarded a catch. You have to complete the act through the entire catch and that includes maintaining posession until you hit the ground. This is clearly defined in the NCAA rulebook, Rule 2-2 Art 7-C-2. "2. Loss of ball simultaneous to returning to the ground is not a catch,
interception or recovery."

Matt, thanks. To answer your questions:
1. Put one hand up as though you're filming with an old movie camera. Then use the other to pretend your turning the crank that makes the film in the camera move. Think 1930s film mechanisms. Trust me, you'd recognize it if you saw it. He was either making a "film" gesture, or he was making a very high "reel them in" gesture. Which to me makes me think they recognized an opportunity and were trying to "bait" Clausen. Either way, both times resulted in near-picks.
2. I can't explain it, other than to say the "letter of the law" is being applied. And a the very least, it's been applied consistantly between the red river shootout, our game, and a call made in the BYU/Washington game, from what I've seen, so while I'm surprised they're going that hard-line with that rule across the leagues, at least it's consistent. Watch us get burned by it someday (we may already have been burned by a misunderstanding of it in the 2007 Stanford game with the Grimes catch).

I'm really bummed I didnt get to see the game - I was on the edge of my seat waiting for a UNC fan's iphone to update while at the wedding. I was impressed with JC's numbers with the exception of the 2 picks - 370 yards or something? Man, we have an offense. Twice now we have lost games because of turnovers in the red zone. In both MSU and UNC, if we protect the ball we win. This has to be a theme for the team, and especially Jimmy.

Hey, did you see that UM (sucks) lost to Toledo???? DTK, I told you! Horrible.

Another good post. I think you're spot on about Jimmy getting a bit carried away with the short pass to Rudolph. Jimmy's got 3 or 4 throws that he loves to make. He usually makes them extremely well, but he's got to learn to mix things up and not be too committed to something before the snap. The great thing is that he's just a sophomore and his main weapons are frosh and sophs. He'll only get better, and it's going to be a lot of fun to watch.

2 questions:
-What is the universal gesture for "filming?"
-I still don't understand UNC's final 3rd down pass that was overturned and called incomplete. I understand the rule, but the receiver looked like he clearly had possession of the ball before "the ground caused him to display a lack of control." He came down with it, took a step or two, then fell. The ball ended up coming loose but went right out of bounds. How is that an incomplete?
