USC: University of the Surprising Choke

The Biscuit

Last year it was Stanford. The year before UCLA? This year - Oregon State Beavers.

USC is quickly becoming University of the Sudden Choke. Although, it’s not becoming sudden, or surprising anymore. It’s becoming routine.

In the past 3 seasons, USC has been STACKED in terms of talent. S-T-A-C-K-E-D. They’ve had clear paths to the MNC each of those years, and each year a team ’sneaks’ up on them. Even though, especially this year, they talked about how they WEREN’T GOING TO BE SURPRISED THIS TIME. THEY WERE GONNA BE FOCUSED. THEY HAVE THE LEADERSHIP AND DISCIPLINE TO BE FOCUSED…enough to lose to Oregon State.

There’s something about this program, this team (this coach maybe?) that just can’t stay focused. They followed up a shellacking of “good” OSU ohio version with a comfy bye week and an upset loss to “not as good” OSU Beaver version. Imagine the surprise.

Don’t do it, it’s a trap!!! No, seriously, PAY ATTENTION…

I’m a supporter of you guys here, but seriously? Hating on USC when ND hasn’t come close the past two years? Save you gloating for when ND actually beats SC.

Nowhere in the post does the author suggest that ND is on the same plane as SC - which they are not. However, that doesn’t dismiss the fact that SC has completely choked against inferior talent the past three seasons - which they have.

I take no issue with the author pointing out SC’s propensity for turding the linens.

BBM, undnut is right. Just because I’m an ND fan and we’ve been down recently (I’d clearly KILL to have USC’s record over the past decade, just like in the decade prior to that when USC was down, USC would’ve KILLED to have ND’s record), it doesn’t mean that I can’t have an opinion on a team when it screws up. Would you seriously argue that my point above is not the case? You sound like the people from Michigan (sucks!) who argued that RR shouldn’t have to pay his buyout clause because UM (sucks) beat ND last year. The two points are completely separate. And it’s not gloating. It’s just the way it is.

While they are two separate issues, I still think a bit of humility would be in order. The headline of the post is “University of Surprising Choke.” As your buddies on NDNation would point out, why not wait on the USC bashing until you beat them?

I’m an IU guy, and I know for sure how you guys feel. Purdue is going to bash our brains in next bball season (same w/ ND). At the same time, I’m not gonna go around and gloat every time Purdue loses. Unfortunately, many “fans” will and make IU’s fanbase look even more arrogant.

Just because they’re two separate points doesn’t make you not sounds like any less arrogant. While you may be “right”, the appearance is that you’re not exactly humbled by your team’s lack of success.

I agree with the Biscuit’s post. Some of it is the media’s image of USC. Why do people look at the Atlanta Braves of recent years and say they were chokers, not being able to pull it all together to win anymore than one championship while lauding the “great Petey C coached teams”?

They have talent, they have lots of wins, but they are the Atlanta Braves of College Football.

BBM, I respect your point. Still, I don’t think the post portrays arrogance so much as a happy dance at the misstep of our arch-rival. Isn’t that what college football is all about?

BBM, this isn’t arrogance. The headline is what it is because that’s what’s HAPPENED. Each year there has been a SURPRISING CHOKE. It’s become routine for that program. I don’t want to re-state the post, but read it again. This isn’t even the ‘happy dance’ as undnut says. It’s just fact. Just because I’m an ND fan and lots of ND fans are arrogant, doesn’t mean that generalization has to be put on me or color everything I/we say here at HLS. Frankly, we don’t care how we look, but that arrogance tag is on you, not me.

Biscuit, agree 100%.

If you are a USC fan, the only consolation is that the loss happened early in the year, still time for the “mighty” SEC teams to beat each other and for USC to sneak back in there.

BBM, what would you have us do? Just completely ignore the fact that things are happening in college football? I dont know about the rest of Domer nation, but I hate, HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE USC. With a freaking passion. Do you want a post from mq or Biscuit saying crap like “its ok, condom fan. Dont fret. You’ll still be stroked in the ass with the media feather no matter what happens to you. You’ll be ok. here, have a beer on us?” NO! SCREW SC!!!
