Dillon Pep Rally Saga Continues

The Biscuit

The Observer included another article on The Cancellation that confirms what one of our readers let us know:  the guys at Dillon had their stuff together.

As MQ noted in the first post on the issue, we know Father Doyle.  And we like him.  But, people can certainly change over time at Notre Dame, priests included.  We’re really hoping that there was a better reason than “last year’s vulgarity” or “the t-shirt designs weren’t ready”.   If the script this year was un-doable, or unable to be fixed/turned around, I get it.  But it sounds like the guys had the script ready, casting together and they were ready for rehearsal and the event was axed - without Father Doyle having even read the script.

This sounds like a bit of the ‘crackdown’ that’s been happening all over ND lately, and it’s 1000% depressing.  At ND, tradition is huge (shocker).  And this, along with a huge number of other small but important events, is an important part of that tradition.  Unilaterally killing off events like this is not only bad for Dillon and the student body.  It’s bad for the spirit, the heart of Notre Dame.

I really hope this isn’t a permanent cancellation and that Father Doyle keeps his word on his plans to reinstate it next year.  If not, we’ll all know what’s really going on here.

This does not bode well for the Keenan Revue. As a Keenan alum from a long time ago (1991, and I’m not afraid to admit it!) we dogged on Dillon (hell, the entire campus!) pretty hard, but it was all in good fun. Yeah, we were edited from time to time, but never even threatened with cancellation. This trend in the making is not good and a real shame. And we thought Patty O’Hara was bad when she ran Student Affairs (what morphed into ResLife)…

I graduated back in 1964, and in some ways the administration is just as tight-assed as it was back then. That was when they turned out the dorm lights at 10:30 on week nights, and had rules the size of a small town phone book…..not that anyone ever took them seriously.
