Beer of the Week: Ballast Point Calico Amber
The Biscuit
Since we’re playing a team from the West Coast this week, I got the honor of taking over BOTW (given my proximity to San Diego and all).
San Diego has a few decent breweries, including the largest local brewer in Karl Strauss. There are some serious serious microbreweries with distribution that goes, oh, maybe 3-4 miles from downtown SD. And then there’s Ballast Point. They’re one of those nice, small/medium sized microbreweries with decent product and okay distribution in the Southwest (think Arizon, Nevada, Cali, maybe a few other Western states). For all you midwesterners, take a visit when you’re on vacation or get out the Internets and do some searching.
In honor of ND’s first game of the season against the Aztecs, I present the Ballast Point Calico Amber.

It’s a good fall beer - a bit heavier than some of the Pale Ales and such that we’ve pimped in the past, but still okay for late summer/early fall. And, of course, it’s still fairly hoppy, brewed as it is in the English ‘bitter’ tradition. Not Pale Ale hoppy, but pretty hoppy for an Amber.
Smooth taste, relatively easy drinking and a good drunk will be had by all that spend some time slugging down a few Calicos. Learn more about Ballast Point and the Calico here.
And check out that freaking fish!
Happy boozing, and Go Irish.
