I generally liked the predictions, but I see no way Meatchicken beats ND this year. Dickrod will have his hands full the first few weeks.

Biscuit: Good point about ‘05 being somewhat of an odd year for college football. Also, while I wasn’t as clear as I could have been in my first post, I don’t necessarily predict that ND will go undefeated in ‘09, but I think that they will have the talent and coaching to win 10 games and put themselves in the national title discussion. By next year ND will have an experienced 4 or 5 star player at virtually every position on the field which they haven’t had in a long time.

Wednesday: You won’t find a bigger fan of Jeff Samrdzija than me–I thought the guy had some of the best hands I’ve ever seen on a receiver at ND and he was a clutch performer. And Mo Stovall was great too. But neither of those guys had the speed to take a short pass, make a guy miss and take it 80 yds for a score ala Bush, Ginn, Tim Brown, Rocket, etc. Even guys like Julius Jones and Tony Brooks had that kind of break away speed. You need at least one guy like that on every team that has the ability to score from anywhere on the field at any time. As much as I love Shark and Big Mo, they didn’t have that type of speed. If you look back and ND’s toughest games in 05 and 06 against talented teams like USC, Michigan, Ohio State, and LSU–the type of teams you need to beat to be a real title contender, the offense really struggled to score points.

SD Irish. I like your style. But, I have to focus on the weakness of the entire NCAA in ‘05 to somewhat temper your optimism. That was a strange year without the many-dominant teams we come to expect in NCAA Football. Yes, there were ‘teams’ – USC included. It just wasn’t likt it’ll be this year and next – with severely loaded teams to contend with (UCS, Texas, Florida…)….

I see the game against Sparta (heretics) as crucial. SDSU is a gimme and Michigan, I don’t think they even expect to win the game this year.
So if ND wins those games and the offensive line protects Clausen, and we have a running game to balance, the team will be formidable.
Best case scenario: the team continues to perform well at home, disappoints at Washington, and performs respectably not not well enough against USC, finishing 10-2. Worst case: they lose against Sparta, Purdue, UW, Pitt, and USC, and we’re staring at 7-5.

I really believe our players and coaches are pissed off about last year and I expect a good year. I agree that we will not go into usc undefeated, but I believe 8 wins is easily reachable before that game. I simply believe Coach Weis is the coach to lead the Irish.
