Back in the Saddle Again

The Biscuit

We’re baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.  According to Scout, ND is ranked the #10 recruiting class to date this year.

It was not that long ago, that Coach Ianello and yours truly were trying to calm everybody down:  Don’t Freak Out, we said.

Just a few weeks ago, I had to defend our recruiting thus far from crack-smokers, with some saying it wasn’t sexy, or good enough.   Turns out, I’m a freaking genius.

With Chris “1 point twenty-one giga” Watt on board now, I think we can safely say that we are back in the recruiting saddle after a slower start to get the ball rolling as compared to last year (not, however, compared to other programs - we’ve actually been right on track compared to most schools’ progress).  This is a solid class top to bottom so far, hitting where we need to hit, and bringing in quality kids that are great athletes and solid students.  Sound familiar?  See:  last year.

And the great thing?  I think we’re just getting started.  We are in on a number of top recruits that can take this Top 10 class to the Top 5, and I think we’re going to win some of those battles.  Guys like Nixon, Martin, Lalota and Motta have the Irish in their mix of schools they’re considering, and we’ll keep landing quality guys at positions of need.  I would guess that we’ll pick up 1-2 more players before opening day kickoff, and then some kids will wait to see how the season takes shape before making moves.  After a decent start to the season, I think we’ll see more significant movement in numbers in October/early November, the cool period, then a few late-comers.   Look for this class to be 90% nailed by November, with 1 or 2 guys coming in late (Nixon among them).

Good props to the team, current recruits and staff.  Well done.  Well done.
