Honor in Recruiting

People have wondered about Charlie’s recruiting acumen.  Why is he having so much success?  What does it mean that he has these rules about your word being your word?  I mean, all coaches tell kids anything they want to hear, right?  They all lie and steal and cheat to get their recruits right?

NO.

Case in point - poaching.  We do not like poaching here at HLS.  Why?  Because it hurts us, and because ND does not do it in return.   So it’s a net loss for the Irish.  I’m sure it’s tempting to Charlie and the staff to do so, but when a kid tells the coaches he’s going elsewhere they give him the ‘good luck, call us if you change your mind’ and move on.  This is honorable.  So we don’t like poaching.  This is also why we don’t like Urban Liar, the king of poaching.

But, other team’s fans say, Charlie does it too!  Look at Lewis-Moore (and Smith last year, etc.) - Charlie and his team kept going after him after he committed to A&M!!!

WRONG.

Here’s the long and short of Charlie’s “you’re looking, we’re looking” rule from his Presser today and how it applies both ways.

Q. The last follow-up I had, I think you were pretty clear, I just wonder if you would repeat it. If you have a player that’s committed somewhere else and then wants to take a visit here, is your rule kind of they have to initiate contact?

COACH WEIS: Always. Remember the rule that when they’re looking, we’re looking? It’s all about looking. If somebody is committed to us and they start making phone calls, then they’re really not committed to us. And if somebody is committed to somebody else and they call us, then they’re really not committed to them, either.
But I think it’s important, you never have to worry about me making a phone call to somebody who’s committed. If that kid calls me up and said I want to talk to you, I’ll return the phone call. I’ll always do that because I believe that it’s something that should not be initiated but it’s something that should not be overlooked because I’ve learned the hard way on that one.

So, all you Urban fans (and you PSU fans that were hoping Satan JoePa could steal Walker from us), shut it.  We don’t do it, you do.  And we still pull the #1 class in the country.

Maybe there’s something to honor in recruiting after all.
