Tenuta Hire: Summed Up
The Biscuit
People create rumors. We’re here to shut those people up.
But first, read a great summary at BGS.
Now, we destroy any rumors floating around out there.
Rumor #1: Bill Lewis was canned.
FALSE, by Lewis:
”I want to make it abundantly clear that this was my decision.”
“I should start by giving some background on this decision. During the bye week this year, I learned that I needed to have both my hips replaced. I’ve run six to eight miles a day almost every day for a long time and now I need to get a tune-up.
“The initial plan was to have surgery on one hip on Feb. 8 with the hopes of being back for the start of spring practice. Then I was going to have surgery on the other hip in the middle of May with hopes to be back for training camp. The more I thought about it, though, I thought this was a selfish plan.
“At this same time, Dr. Kevin White and Bill Scholl were having discussions about creating a position where someone could coordinate a variety of activities involving athletics community relations and represent the department at various events around the country. Dr. White approached me about retiring from the coaching staff and moving over to the community relations staff.
“I viewed this as another way to stay involved in athletics at Notre Dame and to possibly lengthen my career in athletics. I have been a lot of places and I absolutely love this place and my wife feels the same. We love this community and love being part of it.”
Rumor #2: This is a problem for Corwin. I mean, how will they work together? What is this crazy HC/Defense title - how could that exist? No way the sky is blue! And by some morons: Corwin’s on a “hot seat”.
FREAKING FALSE, by Charlie:
“Early in December, I learned that Bill Lewis needed to have both his hips replaced and that he would have a four month recovery. He said there was a chance he may need to leave the coaching staff and that I should prepare a list of replacement names should this come to fruition.
“I spent time with (defensive coordinator) Corwin Brown in January discussing possible replacements for Bill in case this situation arose. Corwin and I talked to a few candidates and agreed that Jon was the best person for the job. Corwin and Jon had numerous conversations on how they would work together and they both agreed this would be a great fit.”
And, FREAKING FALSE AGAIN, by Tenuta:
“[Corwin's] a great guy who I’m looking forward to working closely with daily. My main goal is to do whatever I can to help the defense become the best in the country and help return Notre Dame to where it belongs.”
Rumor #3: Tenuta was being considered for HC positions, so he’ll butt heads with Charlie.
Good LORD people, FALSE, by Tenuta:
“It’s a great opportunity for me to coach at Notre Dame and to work with Coach Weis. I’m truly thrilled about this and my family is excited, too.”
“Two things attracted me to this job, Coach Weis and Notre Dame. It’s an opportunity to coach at one of the greatest traditional powerhouse programs in college football and to work with one of the brightest minds in the game.”
Tenuta is Irish because of Charlie, not in spite of him.
Rumor #4: This will hurt recruiting.
FALSE, by THE BISCUIT IN THE HIZ-OUSE:
That’s right, I’m quoting myself. Deal with it. First, Lewis is still a part of Notre Dame, as outlined above. Right? Right. The guy loves the place, he isn’t going anywhere too far, and I am SURE he’ll be associated with the program for a long time. Second, Lewis was the lead recruiter for 2 players, Slaughter and Blanton. And Blanton, at the least, loves this hire:
“I’m still 100 percent committed,” [Robert] Blanton said. “Actually, I want to change that. I’m probably 12,000 percent committed right now.”
I would expect similar sentiments from Slaughter and other Irish D recruits. If anything, I think this will help bring in guys like Wells - they’ll see the great combination of CB and Tenuta. Hell, other programs are a-feared already, so these kids have to love it. Yes, Lewis was a great recruiter. But Corwin is a great recruiter as well, and so is Charlie. And Tenuta’s style, his knowledge and pedigree will only help lure more guys into the ND fold.
Rumor #5: Lewis is going to take the Athletic Dept job for a few months, then come back full-time in the summer as Special Teams coach. It’ll be a less-intense job for him in terms of time committment, etc, but he’ll be back on the coaching staff and back on the recruiting trail. Plus, he’ll help us turn around that mess that was “special” all right this past Fall.
TRUE?
I don’t know. I have no source whatsoever, but wouldn’t that be freaking sweet?
Rumor #6: Irish Illustrated’s staff is full of self-serving tools, and Brian Hamilton’s offer to join those morons is in the mail.
100%, verified, TRUE.

While everyone has a right to express their opinion, some people who believe they are Irish supporters cannot bring themselves to support anything Coach Weis does. They have to find fault and/or construct rumors that give our opponents false information to take to recruits. The potential for this is evident in the rumors identified in TENUTA HIRE: SUMMED UP.
THE BISCUIT: Well written, and thank you for your comments.
I find it most interesting that Charlie can do no right in many peoples eyes due to the 3-9 season. However, what none of those critics can tell us is a coach who would have brought us a successful season this past year. A win or two maybe, but this year was a wash anyway to those who really follow the program.
Kudos to Charlie, and to Corwin. ND will be back quickly. To bad ND is so irrelevent, there could be a story there!
[...] Bill Smith? Tenuta was hired as assistant head coach, defense, after former assistant Bill Lews had double-hip-replacement surgery. Maybe that’s how ESPN avoids a libel suit from Bill Lewis; they call him Bill [...]
