Friday Rounup: The “It’s Been A Long Time” Edition

domer.mq

Hi.

Yeah. I know. I know. It’s been a while.

Yeah. Thanks. Been watching what I eat. Hitting the gym when I can. A little Bikram Yoga on the weekends, you know. Typical stuff.

Well, thanks. Thanks. And, hey, you look great yourself. A whole new person.

That’s great. Seems to be really working out for you. I can see it in your face; the happiness. It just shines through. Never really seen it like this before.

Yeah. Great. I’m really happy for you. I mean, I know we left things off kind of strained.

Well, hey, how often do you get to go to Nepal?

No. No. Didn’t, uh, didn’t get the postcards. The mail, probably. The mail’s crazy around here. Haven’t gotten my Men’s Health in ages.

Yeah, that’d be great. We should get together sometime. Heck, if you’re up for it, I could go for a drink right about now.

No? Okay. Okay. How about I call you then? I’ve got your number in my five still.

No? You got a new number when you got back? Oh…

Yeah. No. My number’s still the same.

Sure. You can call me.

Bye. Take care. Bye.

The Roundup:

  1. This is his time. It’s his time right here!
  2. Ca - wait for it - ching!
  3. Might Dan Patrick one day host Notre Dame Football?
  4. Blogger meets actual person involved in actual sports franchise and actually doesn’t sell-out.
  5. They’re probably not going to be sentenced to stadium cleaning.
  6. Dickrod had no idea what he was getting himself into.

Irish Look to Adopt New 2-5 Defense

domer.mq

Well, we, as well as you, and probably everyone else, have been hearing rumors that ND Nose Tackle, Pat Kuntz wasn’t going to be enrolling at Notre Dame for the Spring 2008 semester. And now it’s been confirmed. However, we and everyone else hold out hope that Pat can make it back to ND in time for the Fall 08 semester:

“No matter what I’m going to be back there. I’m going to have one more year to play and I’m going to graduate from Notre Dame,” said Kuntz, who is majoring in sociology.

I had the enormous pleasure of meeting Pat’s grandmother right before the Navy game this fall. I don’t think I’d ever met a grandmother more proud than she. I have a feeling Pat will get lots of support at home. Good luck, Pat. We’ll see you back at ND Stadium soon.

Who’s Left on the Board?

The Biscuit

A number of great guys.  Guys that would make this already-#-1 and already-legendary class even moreso.  Let’s take a look, in no particular order:

Cyrus Gray, RB

Gray is pretty much down to UF and ND.  I’m still kinda confused how someone can be down to two schools where 1 head coach is a complete straight-shooter and the other is a lying fraud.  But, I guess if a fraud is really good at being a fraud, he may appear to be a straight-shooter.

I am guessing though, that Urban the Liar hasn’t made Mr. Gray aware of the fact that his own RB coaches are bailing because Running Backs never get the ball in his offense.

“The offense we were running in Florida did not have much involvement with the running back,” [ex-UF RB Coach Slayton who just bailed to go to UT] said during a news conference Wednesday night. “There was some frustration there, I must be honest with you.”

We’ll see where Gray ends up.  I’m hoping he comes North.  Not to save his soul or anything so universal or important.  But so he can touch the ball more than twice in his career.

Irish Shot:  60%

Mike Martin, DT

Mike is another top-notch player that the Irish would love to land.  The Michigan recruit has been shopping around a bit since Dickie Rod took over the program he committed to.  He probabaly watched the WVU defense get shredded by PITT and figured he might want to reconsider.  ND has needs on the D-line and Mike would be a great fit.  He’s got a ridiculous motor, solid size and frame and good speed.  There’s some good video of him here.  Skip through the first part that talks about him being a Wolverine, since that’s TBD and check out the video. Yes, the cheesy music is brutal but you see the guy in action. Another guy that would really make this class totally-crazy-insane.  Instead of insane-crazy.  Which it already is.

Oh, and to all those that say this is poaching like Urban that’s BS.  The kid’s coach and recruiting contact are now no longer at Michigan.  So he was looking around.  We had needs there all of a sudden, so he was offered.  Come off it.

Irish Shot:  30-70% (upcoming visit will determine much, so even though I’m just throwing out numbers, Mike gets a range)

Will Compton, ATH

Compton is a heck of an athlete out of Florida who has been soft verballed to Nebraska for a while.  I guess he wants to get a feel for the new staff there and all before he makes his final call.    The kid is smart (3.7 GPA), fast (4.5) and big (6′2″, 214) with a frame that will fill out.  He could fit in a number of places, but I’d see him as a Safety or OLB.  He’d probably be an immediate plug-in in Special Teams his frosh year too.  While the need for Will isn’t as clear as, say, our need on the DL since he’s the “Athlete” type, he’s another guy that the Irish would love to land.

Irish Shot:  40%

Kenneth Page, OG

Page has been on ND’s radar for a long time, so you know he has a good feel for Charlie and the staff.  ND was also one of his first visits, which is good and bad.  Good because it means he wanted to see the game-day atmosphere, which is almost impossible to top.  Good also because it means he has strong interest.  Bad because 18-year-old kids can forget things.  I used to forget to put on my underwear at that age, so go figure.  Anyway, it’s been a while since that ND visit and he’s taking a few other visits shortly.  But, ND is in the final four, so that’s a good thing.

Under Armour All-American guard Kenneth Page is no longer considering South Carolina, according to The State. Clemson, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Tennessee are the only schools still standing with Page.
He’s already visited Notre Dame and Tennessee, has a date with Clemson for this weekend, and is scheduled to visit North Carolina on Jan. 18th.

Clemson has an impressive class this year so I’m thinking they’re the top competition for him.  With the changes in UT’s staff I have to make them the dog in this race.

Irish Shot:  33%

A number of other players remain possibilities (Lewis-Moore, Tate, Jenkins, etc.) but this group seems to be the core group of players with which the Irish have a good, solid shot.  Anyone else we’re missing?  Because, really, I don’t know jack.  Feel free to comment and add guys in that we might have over-looked.

Go Irish.

Don’t Believe Any Rumors About Dayne Crist

The Biscuit

According to who?

According to the man himself.

From Mike Frank at Irish Eyes:

I’ll keep this simple and sweet. There is only one message to be had here, and nothing further needs to be said.

“There’s been a lot of stuff said lately about me,” said five-star quarterback prospect Dayne Crist. “That’s why I’m calling.”

I didn’t chase Dayne down. I didn’t call. I didn’t even text him to prompt him to call me. He just called me to clear the air about some “rumors.”

“Despite rumors that I’m taking official visits to other places, I am 100 percent committed to Notre Dame,” Crist said. “Don’t believe rumors that you’re hearing. This won’t change for any reason.”

Dayne clearly asked that I print this as his statement to any and all rumors about his commitment to Notre Dame and his interest in other schools. I think it’s very clear. Hopefully everyone will get the message.

Personally, I hadn’t heard anything.   But I wouldn’t be surprised if some coaches (scoughacoughturbancoughacoughnliar) were spreading the rumor to try to weaken the class overall.

This class is solid.  Guys in the class, Dayne ain’t going nowhere.  Fans, same thing.  CW?  Well, you already knew that.

Yes, Walker is Irish! No, We Do Not Live Under a Rock.

The Biscuit

Or The Rock.

We’ve just been busy.  With very important things like Las Vegas and all that it entails.

But we’re really pumped to have Deion on board.  Freaking pumped.  I’ll pump YOU up.

Walker brings another element to the ND receiving corps.  And no offense (no pun! accent on the second syLLAble) to the older guys on the ND roster, but the combination of last year’s talented recruiting group - Kamara and Tate - with Mike Floyd and now Deion makes this one of the most dynamic groups of young WR’s in the country.   Yes, they’re all HS seniors and rising sophomores to be - but in terms of raw talent I’d put this squad up against any other in the country.  Once they fully develop, good lord, look out.

Walker is listed as the 102nd overall player in the ESPN 150 and the #18 WR.  Floyd comes in at #29 overall and #9 WR.  Kamara came in as #29 overall in his class and as the #9 WR, and Tate was #11 overall and #2 in WR’s, despite his more general tag as an Athlete.  Folks, this is talent over talent - and this will be a formidable group as they mature.

More great news for this #1 recruiting class.

Michigan Gets Coach, Loses Players

The Biscuit

We all know that Dickie Rod was hired to coach the University of Michigan.   Now we all know that all his skill players are outta there like swimwear.

Henne, Hart, Long to graduate.

And big-time recruit Ryan Mallet has bailed on the program as of today.  As MQ has mentioned, he wants a pro-style offense.  And no matter what Dickie Rod and his minions try to say about his spread offense (references to his past coaching successes with pro-style QB’s a decade ago don’t negate the fact that his offense is built for athletic, running QB’s folks), there just wasn’t a fit.

“It just wasn’t a fit” according to Mallet’s Dad.

See?

Apparently Mallet will check out Tennessee (I’d say no to that Ryan - Cutliffe is now at Duke, which means the offense will suck again.  Badly.), UCLA and A&M.   UCLA is a good situation for the kid if Mr. Gambler can get things figured out over there, but TN is the good bet if Debord is hired.

All the UM receivers are out as well.  Adrian Arrington has already declared:

“Today is a very emotional day for me,” Arrington said in a statement released by the school on Wednesday. “As much as I will miss my teammates, friends and Michigan football family, I have always dreamed about playing in the NFL.

And I would be shocked if Mario doesn’t join him shortly.

So how’s Michigan going to look next year with its top skill players (Henne, Hart, Manningham, Mallet, Arrington) and its all-world O-line member (Long) long gone?

Pretty, in my eyes.

Anybody Checked Up on Bill Cosby Lately?

domer.mq

Because I think Jamarcus Russell may actually be wearing Bill Cosby as a sweater.

Oh, and the BCS Championship game was played last night. It looked a lot like the Sugar Bowl of last year, except ND was way better against LSU than Ohio State looked.

And yes, that’s probably the only BCS Championship Game post I’ll make today.

Ian Williams, All American

domer.mq

Ian William, true freshman nose tackle for Notre Dame, has finally gotten some credit and in a big way. He was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team.

Ian Williams had an awesome freshman year, but didn’t ever seem to get the recognition of many fans except for when we’d all say, “seems like that guy’s everywhere on the field” and then promptly forget about him until the next time we would say, “seems like that guy’s everywhere on the field.”

Ian had 45 tackles at Nose Tackle over the course of 125 minutes of gameplay. As NDDL99 at NDN figured out, that’s 1 tackle per 2.777 minutes. Repeating of course. That’s just awesome. And it’s why every time I saw Ian run off the field during a defensive series, I promptly yelled, “Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!” and then finished whatever beer I was holding.

Congratulations, Ian. Next Stop: Heisman!

Citing Severe Boredom with Purdue Football, Students Turn to…

The Biscuit

Manure?

Yep, Manure.

Purdue University students are making some extra cash through a project that might turn some of their classmates’ stomachs — by sniffing livestock excrement. [T]hey take whiffs of a variety of smells collected from barns filled with hogs, cows and chickens for odor research being conducted by Albert Heber, a Purdue professor of agricultural and biological engineering.

“Typically they’re farm smells — manure, farm waste, hay. The only thing that is good is that we are not smelling it for a long time. It’s just a sniff,” said civil engineering graduate student Anuj Sharma.

One student said that the Big Drum just wasn’t enough to keep him interested in the Purdue football program anymore, especially after the decision to keep Tiller around was announced, so he just gave up:

“It was just so damn boring, I figured $&#^-smelling was a better alternative.”

We’re with ya kid, we’re with ya.

Michael Floyd is a Stud

The Biscuit

I mean that in many ways beyond on the football field.  In the classroom.  As a person.

How a High School kid has that much perspective is beyond me.  As a senior in HS, I was most worried about my own junk.  Floyd sees the world in a very mature way, which is impressive.

And, all of a sudden, the South Bend Trib isn’t the worst paper in the nation, as they’ve actually written a couple articles that don’t trash the program.  2 in a row! Keep it up Trib, and we won’t have to hate you in 2008.

The article has a few great quotes…

“Sitting there and looking at stuff, I just got the feeling that this is the place for me,” the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Minnesotan said recently during preparations for Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl at the Alamodome.

“I didn’t get a feeling like that from anywhere else as much as Notre Dame. ‘This is the spot for me. This is a place I can have a career and keep going.’ It was just a good school for me to go to.”

”I like to be pushed,” Floyd said of his attraction to Notre Dame. “I know Charlie Weis is big on academics and stuff like that. Being pushed really makes me perform better both in the classroom and on the football field. I mean, that’s what I kind of like.

“Then there’s the players. They’re going through this tough season and yet they make you feel like you’re home. I hadn’t known that. You’re coming in as a freshman, you already have friends there that want to be your friend. They’re easy to communicate with, easy to talk to and stuff like that. It makes you feel like you’re supposed to be there.”

Not surprisingly, Floyd cites things beyond football for his reasons for picking the Irish - a feeling of fitting in, friendship, and the desire to be pushed.  Including in the classroom!  You will not find that in many (any?) kids heading to UF, USC, etc.

It also has come out that former ND player Matt Carufel did indeed push Mike to not pick the Irish.  Thankfully, all that perspective served Mike well in this situation as well:

“He told me I should change my options and stuff like that,” Floyd said, “but I mean, I told him, ‘Notre Dame is the spot for me and I know it’s a spot for me.’ I also know not everybody has a good experience everywhere. I don’t think I’m going to have a bad experience, like he did. It’s just some people have bad experiences where they are and some people don’t, so that’s how it is.”

Where does a young Mike Floyd, football player extraordinaire gain all this perspective?  From, in my opinion, one heck of a parent, and some fairly worldly experiences for an 18 year old kid:

“What makes me strong, what make me who I am are things like a service trip I went on over spring break last year to Venezuela,” he said. “The part we went to, those people didn’t have anything, but they smile all the time. I mean, looking at that made me not want to take anything for granted. It made me feel blessed with what I’ve got.”

So did the talks with his mom, Theresa Romero, about how her lack of appreciation for education at her son’s age came back to bite her later in life. Like when Floyd wanted to attend Cretin-Derham Hall, but the tuition fees were so daunting she initially was reduced to tears.

”I’m going on a Civil Rights trip pretty soon with a couple of people to all the southern states to look at different things,” he said. “I think that’ll be a real mind-opening trip for everybody who goes. I can’t wait.”

There’s no wavering going on with a kid like this.  He’s just too solid, too strong and too focused.  I have a feeling, from everything we’ve read and seen with this class, that Mike represents all the players in this class.  And I get why others like Robinson and Page are interested to join it.  It’s a bit more special than I think any of us have realized up to this point.

More Recruiting. More Optimism. And Leadership.

The Biscuit

In the South Bend Trib they have an article today outlining some serious reasons for optimism.

The quote of the article comes from Dayne Crist, who somehow sounds as polished as a 4-year veteran college player, despite the fact that he’s just a HS Senior.  He responded with this qutoe when asked whether or not he’s been surprised that the ND group has, for the most part (coughcoughHunterbailedcoughcoughMeyerisEvilcough), stayed together:

“All 20-some-odd of us have all our numbers stored in our phones,” Irish quarterback recruit Dayne Crist said. “We’re always picking up the phone. Truthfully, it’s a daily thing. We’ve got great chemistry, and I’m not surprised on how we’re reacting on the field or in this event at all. I mean, I saw that coming for months.

“Everyone was saying, ‘Are you surprised this class stayed together?’ We’re more surprised that we lost one. This is an extremely tight-knit class. You could ask any one of these guys the same question, and they’ll give you the exact same answer verbatim. We don’t want any loose ends in the family. That’s how we feel. We are a family and we feel very strongly about that. We’re now brothers. That’s what we are.”

That is leadership my friends.  Pure and simple.  It’s also pretty easy to read between the lines and hear the “we’re sorry Omar left, but if he wasn’t in the family, he was out” message there.  As Charlie has said, you’re in or you’re out.  You’ve gotta be fully bought in - to your fellow recruits, your upperclass teammates, your coach and the program.  The rest of these guys are.

Tom Lemming is also high on Brandon Newman in the article, whom Irish fans may come to call the “Big Buddha”:

“Brandon is making quite an impression. He’s a Buddha-type guy who stops the run completely in practice, who always gets a push off the ball against All-American offensive linemen.

“He’s got a real mean streak and he’s a tough kid.”

Lemming gives his thoughts on who might fill out the #1 class in the nation as well.

Wide receiver prospect Gerell Robinson (Chandler, Ariz.) said he has narrowed his finalists to Arizona State and Notre Dame but won’t announce Saturday at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl as originally planned.

Lemming does expect wide receiver Deion Walker of Christchurch, Va. — playing in the rival Under Armour All-America High School Football Game, Saturday in Orlando, Fla. — to announce Saturday.

“I think Notre Dame is probably going to get him,” Lemming said. “That would probably mean Robinson wouldn’t also come.”

Lemming says the prospects most likely to fill out ND’s recruiting class beyond Walker and/or Robinson will come from this pool of players: defensive end Nick Perry of Detroit; defensive lineman Mike Martin of Novi, Mich.; running back Cyrus Gray of DeSoto, Texas; offensive guard Kenny Page of Columbia, S.C.; defensive end Datone Jones of Compton, Calif.; and defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore of Weatherford, Texas.

Good stuff, my friends.  Good stuff down there at the All-American game.  Despite Hunter’s change of heart and Urban’s shady dealings, Irish recruits are making waves - they are everywhere, and they are a tight group of players.  Brothers.

Lurch Staggering out of Difficult Position?

domer.mq

Word is Lurch may be picking up his rock and heading home. And by “home,” I mean “not home,” but UCLA. Because “home” would be Texas. Texarkana, Texas to be exact; so named because Arkanatex sounds like a pest-control company. Better to sound like a pet food company.

Ahem.

Rich Rodriguez’s tenure as the head football coach at the University of Michigan is only in its second day, but he may have already lost one of the Wolverines.

There is speculation out of Ann Arbor that freshman quarterback Ryan Mallett has decided to leave Michigan and will transfer to UCLA, according to a person close to the team.

The move would surprise absolutely nobody due to the fact that Lurch would fit the West Virginia Spread about as well as a square peg into a round hole. What is surprising is that Lurch recognized the square peg and identified the round hole. Score one for Texarkana kindergarten!

No word on whether Lurch prefers his Double-Double “monster style,” but I do.

Biscuit is standing by in the UCLA region, ready to take pictures during any sightings of Lurch, Bigfoot.

Open Letter to Fox

The Biscuit

Dear Fox (Sports, Network, FSN, whatever):

You suck at broadcasting college football.  Please, please, PLEASE, either fix it or give up.  And please do one of the two immediately.

Now I’m not saying that ABC/ESPN is perfect - they hire Bob Davie to call ND games, there’s a clear anti-ND bias in the institution, they employ Mark May, etc.  But man, at least they know how to SHOW A FREAKING GAME.

Seriously, fix it up or move it out.  Your NFL games are already subpar, but it’s obvious that you have no feel for the college game whatsoever.  The booth is terrible, I have no idea what the Producers were watching, and can someone fix the freaking graphics PLEASE??!?!?!!

Okay, so a few pointers and I’ll leave you alone:

1) We get that Gatorade paid you for some product placement.  It’s actually a pretty good idea.  You take some money, and you agree to show the Gatorade on the sideline/some player drinking it, etc.   Okay, fine.  But does it have to be so FREAKING OBVIOUS that this is what you’re doing?  It comes out of nowhere, you film the GROUND BENEATH THE WATER TABLE, and then pan up to the dirty/messy/ugly Gatorade ‘tubs’.  Then onto the asses of the players, then to the field?  Good lord.  And you do it twice within 15 minutes.  Please, learn how to do your job decently.  In the future, catch a kid and give him a cup.  Film him drinking from it.  Move on.

Besides, Gatorade already gets the ‘Gatorade Dump’ during bowl season.  They should be happy with that…even though Les Miles doesn’t love it all that much:

2)  We like college bands.  They’re a great part of the tradition of college football. But they are NOT the only non-field shot you can show.  You have blimp angles, field level angles, and, oh yeah, there are OTHER PEOPLE WATCHING THE GAME IN THE STADIUM.  They are called fans.  Film them sometime!  You know, the ones with their faces painted, the ones with their bodies painted, the hot girl ones, the crazy drunk ones.  They are into the game and exciting to watch.  You do NOT have to cut to the OU band after every single play!  You have options!

We love the bands, but enough is enough.

3)  Speaking of bands. Why in the world did your mic team set up directly in front of the OU band as well?  What the F?  All I could hear all night were horns.  Not commentary, not on-field grunts and hits.  The freaking OU fight song over and over.  My 3 year old niece could’ve figured this out.

4)  Your “it’s the mirrors” DLP sponsored camera is cool.  It’s not all that cool that you stole the idea and technology from ESPN, but that’s okay - everyone did.  What I have an issue with is you using that camera during a live play.  You can’t see JACK from that angle unless it’s a perfect setup.  But you don’t know what the play is going to look like before it’s run.  So you USE IT FOR THE REPLAY.  Watching a deep pass play live from that angle is like your camera man filming his knee-cap in EXTREME CAMERA CLOSEUP from Wayne’s World.   You can’t see anything!  I don’t care if it’s sponsored - that angle is meant for replaying when it works.  Not for live shots.  You suck at life.

5)  Finally, your graphics are absurd.  First you put your stupid “3rd & 8″ thing on the field.  Good in theory, but not when the graphic is blue, and the WVU PLAYERS ARE BLUE!!!  The WR’s freaking disappeared when standing on that monstrosity you call ‘innovation’.  Look, we can read.  Put it back up top where it belongs and make life better/easier for everyone.  Especially the dudes’ whose torsoes you cut off on national television.

And that brings me to your scoreboard.  Look, we get that you want to be different.  But why, in the Good Lord’s name, would you drop the scoreboard/ticker down onto the screen 2 inches?  Yeah, we can see that 1 inch opening above it, but your freaking scoreboard is CUTTING OFF SOME OF THE PLAYING FIELD/PLAYERS’ HEADS/THE FREAKING BALL!!!!  When it’s in play.  There is absolutely no, zero, zip, zilch, nada reason to drop that down other than to say “look, we’re Fox, we do things our own unique cute way” (to be read in a high-pitched little girl’s voice).  Get that stupid graphic back up against the top of my TV now, before I end you.

Ignore the names, even though it’s funny, and pay attention to the scoreboard up top.

Other than that, great job.

With Love,

The Biscuit

Nobody’s Watching the Bowl Games

domer.mq

People shake their fists all the time over ND having a “sweet deal” with the BCS system. But there’s a reason the BCS is happy to have any deal with ND: People watch ND.

What don’t people watch? Try Georgia versus Hawaii and USC versus Illionois.

I was curious to see what effect yesterday’s lopsided matchups had on both the Rose and Sugar bowls’ ratings. Sure enough, the overnight Nielsen ratings showed both were down significantly, though not drastically, from last year: The Rose Bowl fell from 14.5 last year (for USC-Michigan) to 12.0; the Sugar from 9.8 (LSU-Notre Dame) to 7.9.

And it’s not because people perceived this year’s BCS games to be full of “lopsided matchups.” NOBODY outside of the ND fanbase thought ND could win the 2007 Sugar Bowl against LSU, but they still watched the game.

And, actually, the 2007 Sugar was arguably more competitive than the 2008 Rose, the 2008 Sugar, or, even, the 2008 Fiesta, in which Bob Stoops proved that his bloodline just can’t coach in the state of Arizona and/or in BCS games.

PS - I spent a New Year’s Eve in Tempe once, for the Bob Davie Fiesta Spanking. I highly recommend it. With or without the spanking.
