Even ESPN is Calling Urban Liar Out
It’s an Insider post, but the first line says it all:
Another day, another story about Urban Meyer’s alleged sketchy recruiting tactics.
It’s pretty much just a review of what we already know - there are a TON of shady/wrong/rule-breaking things that Urban has pulled in the recruiting game lately.
Link.
But it’s one more data point in a string that point to Urb being the Liar.
Kids, don’t go to Urb. The dude will use you, ruin you, and spit you out. And if he gets caught with his shadiness, he’ll blame you.

Okay, I will admit the Urban probably represents everythign that is wrong with college football. That being said, why are you guys going after him so hard? Does it have anything to do with him turning ND down?
I mean there are other coaches who pull the same kind of stuff that Urban does (Bowden, Miles, Carrol jump to mind.
What I take from that article is Feldman’s ability to downplay the violations as “secondary”. Shouldn’t “secondary” violations like this add up to some sort of sanction?
Basically, he dismisses them as no big deal and everyone does it.
Not everyone does it. The underlying theme from his post, and a lot of other media personalities follow suit, is that it’s no big deal to recruit like this.
Well F that.
ESPN is getting me fired up in January…
DTK,
We go after Meyer because Meyer actually uses his asst. coaching time at ND and his decision not to take the HC job against ND. His DC, Greg Mattison, also pounds on ND “based on his experience” even though Mattison liked ND so much that he stuck around ND for 2 different coaching regimes.
Further, Meyer targets ND recruits specifically. I know this to be fact. He looks at the ND offers and just starts to mirror them in a lot of cases, without doing any footwork. He figures if ND offered, they must be very good and there must be no problem getting them into Florida.
Urban just tends to do things with a particularly nasty style. So we decide to shine a light on it.
I get that you have soem legitimate complaints against Urban, he is evil, I get this.
I just feel that an ND site constantly going after Urban can come off petty sometimes. I don’t know how you felt about Urban coming to ND but I know a few ND fans who were devestated when he turned ND down.
Course hindsight is 20/20 DTK, but I’m amazingly glad we didn’t end up with Urban. He’s just too sleazy for the ND mentality (and, a nod to you guys, for the Michigan mentality as well).
Can it come off as petty? Yes, it can. Do we really care? Nope, not at all.
As long as a dude like that takes shots at ND regularly, we’ll keep harping on it. If you had a guy that regularly did this to UM, I am sure you’d have a similar tact.
Plus, as I’ve said before, it’s the off-season. I don’t have much else to say.
And finally, we started jumping on this a while ago. It’s important to point out that we’re not the only ones doing so. And that, actually, should make it seem less petty. Though again, I am fine with petty (remember, I called you a doo doo head).
Biscuit
I get that thinking, DTK, but if you look back at our posting history, we didn’t really start attacking Urb until he lied and lied again to get Justin Trattou to decommit at the 11th hour last year.
I was bummed at first that Urb didn’t take the job. He was the hottest coach in the last at the time. But now I understand better why he didn’t take the ND job.
If you come to ND and win a NC, you become a god. Urb didn’t want to work as hard or sacrifice as much as he’d have to in order to do so. That’s fine.
Why Erb?He thinks he is above the law that’s why.Its not that harg to hide your crimes but he doesn’t even try. That makes him cheezey and it ain’t easy.
Well done. I appaude you
I won’t let Urban off the hook, but how is what Urban does so gravely different than what Weis has done in terms of poaching recruits? (see: pulling people from Nebraska and UM this year).
socraticsilence,
In each of those situations, the players Weis “pulled” were either decommited from their original school or they contacted Weis first.
For example, Brian Smith, last year, was commited to Iowa, heard about the Trattou story and the new DC at ND (Brown), and his father called Weis up to see if ND wanted him.
Exactly…both of the guys that socraticsilence is referring to were at schools where there was a coaching change since they’d committed.
Couldn’t much the same be same about Trattou, ala the DC switch last year.
Socraticsilence,
Maybe, but could it also be said that Charlie lied to the guys he “pulled” from other programs, telling them he’d never move them to DT, and then moving them straight to DT?
Has Charlie ever encouraged a commit to stay quiet about it so other programs waste their time?
Has Charlie run fast and loose with the NCAA recruiting rules because he knows that the NCAA will never actually enforce those rules, effectively giving a big F-you to any sense of honor?
No. What Urban does is both obvious and pathetic.
