Who’s Left on the Board?

The Biscuit

A number of great guys.  Guys that would make this already-#-1 and already-legendary class even moreso.  Let’s take a look, in no particular order:

Cyrus Gray, RB

Gray is pretty much down to UF and ND.  I’m still kinda confused how someone can be down to two schools where 1 head coach is a complete straight-shooter and the other is a lying fraud.  But, I guess if a fraud is really good at being a fraud, he may appear to be a straight-shooter.

I am guessing though, that Urban the Liar hasn’t made Mr. Gray aware of the fact that his own RB coaches are bailing because Running Backs never get the ball in his offense.

“The offense we were running in Florida did not have much involvement with the running back,” [ex-UF RB Coach Slayton who just bailed to go to UT] said during a news conference Wednesday night. “There was some frustration there, I must be honest with you.”

We’ll see where Gray ends up.  I’m hoping he comes North.  Not to save his soul or anything so universal or important.  But so he can touch the ball more than twice in his career.

Irish Shot:  60%

Mike Martin, DT

Mike is another top-notch player that the Irish would love to land.  The Michigan recruit has been shopping around a bit since Dickie Rod took over the program he committed to.  He probabaly watched the WVU defense get shredded by PITT and figured he might want to reconsider.  ND has needs on the D-line and Mike would be a great fit.  He’s got a ridiculous motor, solid size and frame and good speed.  There’s some good video of him here.  Skip through the first part that talks about him being a Wolverine, since that’s TBD and check out the video. Yes, the cheesy music is brutal but you see the guy in action. Another guy that would really make this class totally-crazy-insane.  Instead of insane-crazy.  Which it already is.

Oh, and to all those that say this is poaching like Urban that’s BS.  The kid’s coach and recruiting contact are now no longer at Michigan.  So he was looking around.  We had needs there all of a sudden, so he was offered.  Come off it.

Irish Shot:  30-70% (upcoming visit will determine much, so even though I’m just throwing out numbers, Mike gets a range)

Will Compton, ATH

Compton is a heck of an athlete out of Florida who has been soft verballed to Nebraska for a while.  I guess he wants to get a feel for the new staff there and all before he makes his final call.    The kid is smart (3.7 GPA), fast (4.5) and big (6′2″, 214) with a frame that will fill out.  He could fit in a number of places, but I’d see him as a Safety or OLB.  He’d probably be an immediate plug-in in Special Teams his frosh year too.  While the need for Will isn’t as clear as, say, our need on the DL since he’s the “Athlete” type, he’s another guy that the Irish would love to land.

Irish Shot:  40%

Kenneth Page, OG

Page has been on ND’s radar for a long time, so you know he has a good feel for Charlie and the staff.  ND was also one of his first visits, which is good and bad.  Good because it means he wanted to see the game-day atmosphere, which is almost impossible to top.  Good also because it means he has strong interest.  Bad because 18-year-old kids can forget things.  I used to forget to put on my underwear at that age, so go figure.  Anyway, it’s been a while since that ND visit and he’s taking a few other visits shortly.  But, ND is in the final four, so that’s a good thing.

Under Armour All-American guard Kenneth Page is no longer considering South Carolina, according to The State. Clemson, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Tennessee are the only schools still standing with Page.
He’s already visited Notre Dame and Tennessee, has a date with Clemson for this weekend, and is scheduled to visit North Carolina on Jan. 18th.

Clemson has an impressive class this year so I’m thinking they’re the top competition for him.  With the changes in UT’s staff I have to make them the dog in this race.

Irish Shot:  33%

A number of other players remain possibilities (Lewis-Moore, Tate, Jenkins, etc.) but this group seems to be the core group of players with which the Irish have a good, solid shot.  Anyone else we’re missing?  Because, really, I don’t know jack.  Feel free to comment and add guys in that we might have over-looked.

Go Irish.

How great if we could add to this already impressive class. Congrats to the hard working coaches. Someone reported Compton was offered as a FB. I like Compton’s recruiting pictures on his bio. He looks good in an Irish sweatshirt.

Anon, you are boring. At least mock us in some way.

Compton could be offered as a FB. I honestly wasn’t sure where he projected-given his size he could fill out to be a solid FB.

This site is becoming the ND version of MGo. Can you write one article without insulting another program? I used to enjoy reading your work but it has become very petty and annoying.

Curly,

That’s just about the most insulting thing anyone has ever said to us. Not the “petty and annoying” part. It’s a blog. I don’t care about that. But the “MGo” part. Ouch. I’d better stay away from bridges and alcohol today.

Curly (6) and Anon (1) take your warped opinions and shove them where the sun doesn’t shine. Some of us really enjoy this blog, because we love the Irish of Notre Dame.

If I were a betting man, I would bet RR and staff lock Martin back up on his official visit and he never even sets foot on ND’s campus (except to win a couple of games playing for UM).

DTK,
I suspect you’re right. It will be tough for Weis et al to overcome originally passing on Martin to pursue Hunter. Nobody likes being the consolation prize, especially high school football stars. If RR can’t lock him down, then, well, that doesn’t bode well for his recruiting future.

curly, when Urban stops poaching I’ll stop mocking him about it. and when we all become friends with the Michigan faithful, i’ll start writing about how great they are. since neither of those things are likely to happen any time soon, it’ll probably keep happening. besides, it’s the off-season. if i cant spend time mocking other programs, what will i do with my time?

DTK and MQ - don’t forget though, Martin was a consolation for Michigan too. They held off on offering until after Hunter went to ND. I think Martin knows this. I agree it’s an uphill battle for ND right now, but I still believe his visit (if it happens) will be the big determining factor. Kids feel like they commit to coaches, and Lllllloyd’s no longer there. If I had to bet, I’d say UM. But I dont think ND is out of it.

Also, Charlie is scheduled to visit Martin Tuesday, with RR visiting him Wednesday. At the least, he’ll have the full sell from Charlie before RR has a chance to potentially re-sell him on UM. To date, it’s only been Jonas Gray and the assistants recruiting him.

bgr,

While Martin looks like a good/great prospect I will hold off on evaluating RR’s recruiting aptitude until he has gone through a full recruiting year at UM.

Biscuit,

Agree on the comitting to coaches part to some extent, but I think Lloyd and company did a great job last year in selling kids on the school. As such, UM has not seen as much turnover in verbal commits as other schools as of yet. I still think they might lose a couple but all in all they have held up pretty well.

DTK, I agree. I’ve actually been amazed at how little turnover there has been given the (perceived) vast differences between Carr and RR. But (and this applies to any school’s class) there is a long road to signing day and things could still change. I think if Charlie gets Martin to ND’s campus, it becomes a much more open recruitment for Martin. If RR keeps him on board the day after Charlie’s visit and Martin cancels the ND campus trip, it’s obviously over. I think Charlie’s sell will be to try to get him to take the trip. Just that, nothing more.

Looks like Cyrus committes to A&M, oh well. Lets get one or two more of these guys to be a super-stellar class.

By the way Compton is from Missouri, not Florida “The wang of the US”

Thanks for the notes of support sir john and jim. We appreciate it. But we also expect it - not everyone is going to support everything one (meaning ‘us’) writes, especially on a blog. We just like the attacks to be more fun to deal with. Saying a blog isnt good or asking us to stop being annoying and petty by attacking our enemies (which is what we were born to do) is just boring.

Brad, it looks like you’re probably right. There’s been a ton of reports on a ‘potential committment’ but I did see one source calling it official to A&M. I hope we have a shot still but you’re probably right. At least A&M isn’t UF. I dig the yell callers there and all that business. Gray may have seen the crew we have already and decided to ply his trade elsewhere, or any other number of reasons. I would’ve liked to have him, but hopefully we can land 2-3 of the other guys out there…
