Ian Williams, All American

Ian William, true freshman nose tackle for Notre Dame, has finally gotten some credit and in a big way. He was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team.

Ian Williams had an awesome freshman year, but didn’t ever seem to get the recognition of many fans except for when we’d all say, “seems like that guy’s everywhere on the field” and then promptly forget about him until the next time we would say, “seems like that guy’s everywhere on the field.”

Ian had 45 tackles at Nose Tackle over the course of 125 minutes of gameplay. As NDDL99 at NDN figured out, that’s 1 tackle per 2.777 minutes. Repeating of course. That’s just awesome. And it’s why every time I saw Ian run off the field during a defensive series, I promptly yelled, “Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!” and then finished whatever beer I was holding.

Congratulations, Ian. Next Stop: Heisman!

“Repeating of course.”

Did you just quote the Leeroy Jenkins video?

If there is any justice in college football, that will not be the last recognition accorded Ian. In the future, additional recognitions will be forthcoming to other members of the Freshmen and Sophomores from the 2007 team. They paid their dues.

This has been out for a while but many people (not saying you, or your excellent blog) in the rush to crown Omar as the nose tackle of the future forgot about Ian. As a true freshman, and with many fewer minutes he got almost as many tackles as Kuntz. Kuntz deserves all the credit int he world for playing out of position and undersized but Ian frankly looks every bit as good from day one.

Kudos to him, and he is going to anchor that spot for years to come - it isn’t a glamorous spot but he has what it takes to be the best.
