UCLA: Racist As All Hell
UCLA fired Karl Dorrell today. Wow, I can’t believe they would do such a racist thing. They fired an African American coach that didn’t perform. And they did so when he had FOUR MORE YEARS left on his contract. The humanity! He’ll only get $2 MILLION for doing a mediocre job!
Oh. My. God.
Racists! All of those Bruins out there in warm, sunny beautiful California! They fired him because he’s a minority!!!
Nevermind that they hired him in the first place (when he was still African American), and that UCLA provided him with a great chance to run a football program at a prominent west coast FBS school. Forget about the fact that his record at 35-27 wasn’t acceptable to his superiors. Forget about the fact that they made him RICH.
Because it’s all because of the color of his skin! And Karl sure thinks that’s the case.
Dorrell did a good job from Sunday to Friday (sound familiar?), but couldn’t quite get things done on Saturdays.
Although he helped clean up the program, that was only part of what Guerrero wanted.
“The other was to build this program into a consistent winner, a program that would be in the national discussion on a regular basis,” Guerrero said.
Fortunately for UCLA, no one cares all that much about their football program beyond Westwood (and maybe Brentwood), so no one will publish the cries/excuses/hype-ridden stories designed to inflame and incent. Refreshing, I’d say.

Haaaaaaaaaaa No flack on UCLA I see.
Biscuit, you’re disappointing me.
I don’t disagree that Dorrell got a fair shake, but your link to this other blog, dumpdorrell.com, is silly. That blogger mentions the LAT columnist is a Cal grad like it’s a conspiracy that explains why he wants Dorrell to stay. The blogger is also plain wrong about UCLA being “one of the best coaching jobs in college football.” WRONG. They can’t even get the best talent in LA-LA-land as long as USC is kicking butt every year.
Furthermore, on this point - the role of race — there are going to be opposing viewpoints. How can you blame a black columnist for stating an alternative point of view on the fate of Dorrell, given this country’s shameful history of slavery and segregation?
Let the man have his say without shouting him down like some Internet mob that throws around the words “inflame and incent.” (I think you mean “incite,” btw.) This is how Jim Crow cops used to justify arresting civil-rights-era protesters, remember? I don’t think Father Hesburgh would approve of that.
Wow.
what wow?
Wow is right. Elkona, that was an absurd response.
1) I’m not going to defend everything/anything on the dump dorrell site. That’s not my site or my words. Of COURSE they’re going to say UCLA is one of the best programs in the country, and that Cal fans/alums are no good - they’re UCLA fans. They hate Cal. The link, per the context of the post, was to share the quotes that Dorrell made on the situation and the ‘fair shake’ that he feels he didn’t get. I thought that was pretty clear.
2) In no way did I ’shout down’ anyone, and comparing me to Jim Crow cops is down right ludicrous, and extremely offensive. I’m pretty pissed to be honest. That type of labeling is irresponsible, illogical and outright wrong. I would appreciate it if you took that back. Dorrell has the right to say that race played a part, ESPN has a right to say that Ty was fired because of race, and I have the right to say that that is all complete BS. And there’s not a racist bone in my body.
3) Yes, slavery and segregation were and are terrible things. Posting a response like that that implies that I somehow think that slavery is okay is just freaking wrong.
4) I agree - people have a right to SAY anything they want - I didn’t mention anything about free speech. People can cry race all they want with this firing (though they’re not in this case for the most part, other than Dorrell). But to say that Dorrell got fired because of his race/that he didn’t get a fair shot is completely insane. Much like it was to say that Ty got fired because of race.
5) I’ve spoken with Father Hesburgh in the past, and he’s sharp as a tack. No way he’d go for this double-standard you’re espousing.
6) The only thing I’ll give you credit for is that you’re clearly not racist either. Good for you, I’m happy. And that you were right - I meant ‘incite’.
elkona,
You’re ridiculous. Your post is ridiculous. Your lack of understanding about the way the world works is ridiculous.
I can delete your comment if I want to, but I wont, because no amount of deleting would nullify your ridiculousness.
Brian,
You really are inane.
Congratulations! We have accomplished Karl’s goal to inflame , insight , and boost his readership.
Well, I don’t think Karl Dorrell has ‘readership’ as he’s a coach and not a blogger, but we did manage to fire up one reader with our sarcasm-laden POV that race had nothing to do with the firing and should be a non-issue. So we’ve got that going for us.
Elkona = Idiot. Here’s some help:
Sarcasm: remarks that mean the opposite of what they seem to say and are intended to mock or deride.
My God, could you be more sensitive and overreact a little more, please? That’s what makes this country great, after all!
Domer,
My apologies. I forgot to take my meds.
I like Care Bears.
There are meds for being inane? Wow, I know a lot of people that could use those. MQ didn’t mis-type there. He meant inane, not insane. Just in case that wasn’t a joke. And given the inanity of previous posts, I doubt it was.
