Note To Charlie:

I am defending you on this site.  I still believe you’re a good coach.  So why are you making foolish decisions?  Are you stressed? Are you pushing too much?  Listen, this isn’t tough:

  • Run the ball.  NOT by giving it to your FB who isn’t much of a blocker let alone a runner.  Give it to James and Armando.
  • Do not go for it on 4th and 9 from the 40.   Punt it and win the Field Position battle.  Your offense isn’t good enough to put the D in these bad field position situations.

That’s it. The fumbles and such are mistakes, they’re happening (they shouldnt be, but you’re not fumbling the ball so I can’t tell you to stop doing so).

So help these kids out okay?

Biscuit

Jimmy F D,
You need to calm down and have some self control. There is more than just Charlie to blame (and he has made some mistakes).
1. CW Jr. on the side lines is ok. (ND is a family)
2. The 2nd hardest schedule in the nation. (by the way the school with the hardest is 2-something)
3. CW won with experienced players the previsous two years. Players that were not winning much the years before.
Coaches who went up against CW in the pros call him a genius (not Charlie).
4. CW should have played the current Jrs, Srs and 5th years more often when ND was going to two BCS games in a row, since not going to one for a long (can’t remember if ever) time. However he was trying to win games not provide experience.
5. Brady Quinn ran for his life when he played, but he had the strength to escape ( benched as much as most linebackers entering the pros).
6. This team will become much better. It’s easy to blame CW and he has taken the brunt of the responsibility. Playing one half to two thirds Freshman and Sophmores with no prior or little game time is another reason.
7. Jimmy C. gave a lot of hope for next season. Hope he continues to improve.

Let me just say I’m numb at this point in the season, but I’m encouraged by the play of the younger guys and consistency will come with experience. Clausen and the freshmen receivers and running backs will develop. I also like the way Stewart blocked. I saw one pancake which also took out Carlson. I’m still supporting Weis, but a record worst than 8-4 next year may cause me to jump ship.

james f dougherty,
what you’ve written is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent comment were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on the internet is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Please, for the sake of the internet, never use a computer again. And if you can’t manage that, just never come to this site again.

I suspect there might have been alcohol involved in that rant, even though it was posted at 12pm.

Yeah, James, you are totally off base about Charlie having his kid on the sidelines. That’s completely irrelevant, and if we were winning, you’d be crowing about how great ND is because we’re so family-friendly. You either don’t have kids or hate the ones you have to talk like that.

I’m also sick of people who are mad at Charlie focusing on his weight. What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Either he can coach or not, and weight has nothing to do with it.

I’ve had my moments of doubt and pain this season, but in the end, Charlie has already proven he knows how to coach. If he was so terrible, this would have happened every year since he took over. Obviously, it hasnt.

I’m not saying I’m SURE things will work out better next year, but I confident enought that I would be willing to bet they will.

I’m also not saying Charlie hasn’t made mistakes this year; its pretty clear he has. But I think that the level of let-down I’ve had this year is partly a product of having high expectations of Charlie in the first place; maybe too high. So, I’ll be happy enough if we go at least 6 - 6 next year (although I expect we’ll do better), as long as I can see the pieces coming together for down the line.

I’ve had my low points/doubts at different points this season, but

JFD’s rant was mostly idiotic, but I think there is some merit to the stupidity of having Jr. on the sidelines. There’s no need for it, and there’s CERTAINLY no need for him to be wearing a headset. It bugs the shit out of me. Yeah, yeah, ND is a “family.” Most of us have families, too, but I would assume we generally don’t bring them to fucking work with us.

At November 12th, 2007 at 4:59 pm, Bad Kermit said...

Oh, and Jr. being on the sidelines is obviously a trivial matter and one of the last things they should be worrying about. I just think it’s insanely stupid, and really no place for a kid.

The Charlie Jr. debate has gone on for a while. While I’m all for the kid learning, I do think it’s a bit weird. I dont freak out about it nor do I think it detracts from Charlie’s ability to coach in any way, and I also think it’s a very small matter. But it’s weird.

At November 12th, 2007 at 6:14 pm, domer.mq said...

Considering what Charlie’s buddy Andy Reid is going thru right now, I’m not surprised Charlie would want to find ways to interact with his kid given the hours he puts in on the job. I’m surprised more coaches don’t do it.

At November 12th, 2007 at 7:18 pm, Bad Kermit said...

Q, just because Reid’s kids are drug-addled spazzes doesn’t mean Weis’ kid is going to turn out that way. How much “quality time” is he getting with the kid on the sidelines, anyhow? Frankly, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere NEAR Weis during games this year, and I certainly hope he’s not holding anything back because his kid is listening in (though I doubt he is).

Furthermore, if Weis is spending even 5 minutes of “quality time” with his kid during the game, it’s a disservice to the team. Play catch with your kid in the offseason, for God’s sake. I’m not asking Weis to ignore the kid. Just spend about 50 hours a year away from him during game time. Again, a minor issue, but at least a somewhat valid complaint. Hell, I’d love to have my wife sitting next to me at work, but if she were here, I’d be even less productive than I am right now.

At November 12th, 2007 at 7:20 pm, domer.mq said...

It’s not a minor issue. It’s a non-issue. The minute people stop worrying about it is the minute the Football IQ of the Notre Dame Fanbase will jump 20 points.

At November 12th, 2007 at 7:51 pm, Bad Kermit said...

That’s pretty dismissive. Dusty Baker spending quality time with his kid in the dugout was a “non-issue” until the 2002 playoffs, too. I don’t think kids should be allowed on a college football sideline. I don’t think that makes me an idiot.

At November 12th, 2007 at 8:17 pm, domer.mq said...

I don’t think you’re an idiot, obviously.

I do think there’s a big difference between a teen on the sidelines and a toddler working as a bat boy. Jr.’s about one of the most mobile people on that sideline. Get the old priests, admins, etc… off the sideline if safety is a concern.

Even if it were an issue, which it ain’t, it’s akin to saying, “This sky scraper is about to collapse on 1000s of people. I think part of the problem is that the gargoyles on the top are facing east.” I can’t believe we’re even entertaining this item on HLS. Not to be elitist, but I’d like to think we’re at least slightly above that.

I’ve managed to determine that alcohol had nothing to do with JFD’s first comment. Unless he’s very, very drunk all the time. His last 3 attempts at commenting have been, um, surreal.

Maybe we should all get drunk and then re-read the comment to see if it makes more sense.
