Jimmy Clausen Has Poor Taste in Beer

Well, let’s set aside the “effort” that Eric Hansen has put into this bit of invesitgational journalism for just a moment, and peer closer at what really matters.

Indiana State Excise Police cited the 19-year-old Clausen and a 23-year-old outside the Belmont Beverage store at 1621 South Bend Ave., near the Notre Dame campus, police said.

[…]

The 23-year-old entered the store and bought two 1.75-liter bottles of Smirnoff vodka and a 200-milliliter bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, police said, as well as a case containing 30 cans of Natural Light beer.

Ok, first of all, kudos to the kids for not cheaping out and buying Osco brand liquors. Sure, you were probably just buying the “good” bottles for the first party to impress the ladies, and you’ll probably replace them with the Osco stuff, but good on ya anyway. Still, Natty Light? If you’re gonna slum it, go all the way with some 40s of Lazer, man! Geez! You’re young, and you probably haven’t fully developed a good pallete for the stuff, but that’s really no excuse. How will you ever know good beer if you continue to drink swill? You’re not 15 anymore! Get your act together, man. Oh, and next time, don’t get caught.

That may just be the worst written “news” story I have ever read. This guy gets paid for this? Wow.

DTK,
Hansen is notorious for looking at ND as his personal stepping stone to go to the “big time” in Chicago. He’s convinced one of his dirt digs will result in a job at the Tribune.

My the way, DTK, I’d expect you to be more upset about the choice in beer. This is America’s youth we’re talking about.

“Maybe someday Jimmy Clausen will make headlines for something he actually does on the football field — not for ornate announcements with stretch Hummers, not for clandestine elbow conditions, and, most recently, not for a minor scrape with the law.”

Could there be a more smug way to start an article? Uggh, you’d think Pete Carroll was writing it.

The Kelly Green, ND blog, has ripped Hansen’s article to shreds.
Clausen was in a car waiting while an adult 23 yr.old purchased the beer. While still in the parking lot the Indiana beverage control police cited driver & Clausen, but not the other ND student. What’s up with that.
CW should ignore Hansen’s sorry a$$ at all further news conferences.

These kids need to learn how to handle this stuff. Yes, kids drink, even ND football players. But for god’s sake don’t GO on the beer run! Stay in your dorm room and let the of-age guys deliver it to you. It’s been done a million times. Its not that hard to do right. Course there is no evidence that that was jimmy’s beer or that he planned to partake. I am just saying…

As for MQ’s overall point I agree it’s swill. But I have to take a few issues with that point my HLS colleague. 1. As a freshman, we only cared about quantity, not quality. With Natty at 5 bucks a case, it was our staple as well. And the only way to keep a jam-packed dorm party going til 2. We were just as guilty, and I am proud of it. 2. Taste in booze comes with age, be it beer, liquor or wine. While we would run the occasional case of ‘quality” Heineken, 40’s of OE were just as common. 3. You disqualified yourself as a judge on the topic of beer when you dissed Boddy’s a while back. But we love you just the same.

Stupid law. whats up with Indiana lawmakers? Serioulsly, a citation for driving a car with beer IN it? Weak.

As far as the beer quality, we need to get some Shiner up there for yall from TX.

Man, that law is garbarge.

I don’t remember this from when I was at ND, nor do I understand this law at all. You can’t be in the car if you are under 21 and there is beer (unopened) in it? That makes no sense whatsoever.

This is an arcane and archaic law and Carroll’s attempt to further hs career at the expense of the Clausen family is utterly distasteful. BTW, am I the only one who thinks Carroll looks like an axe murderer in the photo next to his articles???

Oh, horror of horrors! ND students (Clausen and Hand) like to drink beer and get laid! What is this world coming to? They should both be dressed in sack cloth and ashes and beat their chests in front of Corby Hall for six weeks of penance.

That would make good copy in the SBT
