[...] Yeah. I know. I know! First we kick you in the gnads by ranking our and your beloved Irish at #24, and then while you’re laying there, stunned, we give you atomic purple nurples, backwash in your slurpee, and steal your girlfriend by ranking Boston Freaking College at #23. Death threats may be sent along to the address at the right. [...]

wow, from a Michigan fan no less. my prognostication for the UM squad would not have been so nice.

as in, they take the field, they suck. they lose.

'bout it.

not really, but it's what my heart says. go irish!

I tend to agree with Cuso in terms of the early part of the schedule. Look at the schedule
GT - no Calvin Johnson (but then again no Reggie Ball, maybe some addition by substraction there), craptactulous Head Coach, at home should be a win
Penn State - the only problem here is that it is at Penn State, this is not a good team, I think ND wins this one
UM - loss for ND (but then I am biased)
MSU - even though JLS is gone, should be a win for ND, serious rebuilding here
Purdue - come on, it's freakin Purdue here, I think ND loses to PSU or Purdue but not both
UCLA - toss up
BC - come on, Ty and Davie are gone, new coach for BC, should be a win
USC - as long as the Gator Bowl reps don't walk away in disgust, ND is fine
the next 4 are gimmes I think

Bottom line, I see 3-4 regular season losses at the most for ND.

screw cold rationality -- this is a year that just made for irish magic -- we are full of talent and totally under the radar -- charlie is an excellent football coach and these guys are legitimately hungry ... and did i mention talented?

on offense, the group that the graduating players have said will surprise people the most will be our o-line, who with at least some veteran (sully) and semi-veteran (young) experience will allow us to move the ball consistently on offense with a strong running game -- i'm saying it now, they will simply be way better and more consistent than last year's unit (sure they'll have some trouble in pass protection against some of these top defensive fronts that we'll be facing, but I really can't see them having any more of those than last year's group) -- this will allow charlie to control the clock -- and let's not forget about our trio of big, athletic tight ends who could create all kinds of problems for opposing defenses when they're in two and three tight end sets

the defense may only be as good as the the front 3 can take it -- with no true nose tackle (i'm still crossing my fingers for a healthy chris stewart to step up into that role during fall camp) it may be tough to be a top-25 defense -- but we should, if nothing else, be better than last year because of an experienced and talented secondary that is going to be trained to move to the ball and make plays -- our defense will create turnovers and some of them will be huge turnovers at crucial times against tough opponents

and we'll get some big plays from special teams this year -- some big returns by a slim and determined zibby on punts and an insanely fast kid named armando on kickoffs -- geoff price will be a huge asset in the field position game

i'm going ra-ra on this one and predicting we make it out of the early season gauntlet with just 2 losses ... or maybe even less than 2

OC... I was going to do a Tracker 10, but I was tired of not being my usually enthused self. If It'd done one, it would have been from a homer perspective. Not very consistent with the rest of the write up.

What? No HLS Tracker 10 forecast? (You had a forecast at #24, but not at #25).

Here's my read on the 2007 Irish: The offensive line has to be very good, or we're screwed. If the O-line gets it done, we'll have a balanced offensive attack and what I expect to be a much improved defense, so we'll be okay. We may lose some games, but won't get blown out. If the O-line struggles, we are in serious trouble. Weak run game puts too much pressure on young QB and inexperienced receivers. Blitzes, sacks, fumbles, and INTs ensure. Chains are not moved. Defense has to defend a short field. And then things get ugly.

I can live with it......I look at 2007 as the last step back toward the rebuilding process. I think 2008 and beyond will make whatever happens this year worth it.
