Offense U
The Biscuit
C-Dub and ND landed another very-top recruit today in California’s Dayne Crist. The LA Times is reporting the pending commitment (press conference tonight) here:

Though recruiting rankings are still not yet published, it would be hard to believe that the top QB in talent-rich California wouldn’t be somewhere near the top of those lists.

We started calling ND Tight End U the other day because of our great hauls at the Tight End position over the past few seasons. Now, screw it, we should just start calling it Offense U because for the second straight year we’ve landed the best QB out of California. Charlie is seriously building an army, and he’s stealing recruits right out of his rivals’ back yards. If Corwin Brown can have half the success Charlie is having, this will be one solid team talent-wise in a few short years. And once that talent gap is narrowed, or reversed, things will get ugly for Irish opponents. I like it.
Crist, from Sherman Oaks’ Notre Dame HS and a teammate of stud LB Anthony MacDonald who committed to ND on the 11th of this very same month, is a prototypical Pro Style QB with great arm strength.
What’s also extremely nice, satisfying, good-chills-creating and all that kind of stuff is that Crist was the only QB offered a scholarship thus far this year by USC. And Michigan. (Thanks to www.NDNation.com for that tidbit).
Take that you posers.
Weis is building a stable of talent at his key positions. And he’s winning a lot of these battles based on his proven success, great product and his ability to develop talent. He’s proven what he can do with a player with talent by turning ho-hum players (2 years ago) into All-Americans and potential NFL stars (Quinn, Samardjiza, Stovall, Mcknight, etc…)
HS Players see that success and want the same thing. And soon, the bowl victories will follow, as will the Return to Glory we’ve all been craving.
Congrats on a great decision, Dayne, and welcome to the Notre Dame family!

This is great news, of course, and Crist is sure to be a big success.
Now, about the defense……..
So what are we gonna do with this upcoming logjam at the QB position? Do we expect all our upcoming QB’s to stay patient for three years while the guys ahead of them get out of the way? While you can never have too much great talent, too much at one position might be causing problems.
I don’t see what the problem is if there are too many good QBs. Obviously the best one is going to start, and if that’s happening, who cares if some of the others transfer? Just hope they don’t transfer to rivals. In any scenario, the best QB will be playing. And with so many good QBs, there will probably always be a good QB at ND. Which is a great luxury, and is why Charlie is doing this.
My take is that Crist’s commitment means Clausen will win the job this year. That would give Clausen 3 or 4 years; if Crist redshirts, he would get two years to try to start. If Clausen leaves after 3 years, Crist would get a shot to be a three year starter. I don’t know if I got all the years right, but it’s something like that.
I agree. We’re losing at least one QB no matter what–and it totally doesn’t matter. I also agree with the sentiment that it’s practically statistically impossible for Charlie not to develop another Brady Quinn out of this mix.
One word. Depth. Now we don’t have to worry every time our QB goes down. The days of having a TE start a game @ QB are over. Thank god.
awe come on, the “In GODsey We Trust” t-shirts were cute.
Yeah, this is not a problem. It’s a great situation. USC has pulled in a top-rated QB virtually every year for the past 5-6 years. Some don’t develop, others transfer, some start and become awesome long-term players. But the average QB starts for less than 2 years, so there’s plenty of playing time to go around. BQ was a huge exception. Building a stable of talent will just result in a better QB on the field, and a better one backing him up. Good for the program, and actually good for the kids.
Go Irish.
Godsey, ha. Good stuff.
I would still like to see some emphasis on defensive recruiting. A stud defense will let CW keep his star QB (whomever that is) on the field more.
gwzimm,
I don’t think there’s a lack of emphasis on D recruiting. It’s just that the “Charlie Weis Offense” is already a top brand name to which kids will just naturally flock. I have a feeling a “Corwin Brown D” will be a hot brand in a year or two as well.
yeah, i agree. a bigger emphasis on D recruiting is clearly a priority in the program, but it will take time to see results like we’ll get with the offense. it will always be a tougher sell on the D side, at least until recruits get to know Corwin, and/or see his D in action (hopefully with success)
