Friday Roundup: The Pick Yourself Up And Get Back On That Damned Horse Edition

The above headline could be in reference to last night’s recruiting bombshell, or it could be in reference to a certain bottle of Johnny Walker Black. I’ll never tell.

The Roundup:

  • IRT takes a look at Florida’s container-ship worth of defensive end prospects and wonders if Urb plans to run a gadget defense along with his gadget offense I like to call “Timmy! Special!”. That’s right, Timmy. You are special.
  • BGS has more news-tidbits than you can shake a stick at. Why shake a stick at something? When has shaking a stick ever resulted in anything but a poked eye and a ruined 5th birthday party? Whoa. Flashbacks.
  • FireMarkMay tried to warn us all. Hopefully in the event of a real crisis, we all respond better.
  • Robot Charlie manages to creep us out and satiate our thirst for all things Corwin Brown all at the same time.
  • I have just one disagreement with Bonger and his latest post over at NDN blogs; kicking the down sure looked fun in the eyes of Michigan, LSU, and SoCal.
  • The Big Lead reminds us that while children the world over are forced to starve and endure visits by Sally Struthers, Mike Wilbon is making 2 Million Dollars a year excreting bile through his mouth.
  • EDSBS points out that Urban Meyer likes his recruits like he likes his eggs: Scrambled. No. Wait. That’s not how it goes. He likes his recruits like he likes his women: Poached. Yeah. That’s much better.

Hey, speaking of eggs and whiskey, it’s time for lunch!

All very clever, but if CW doesn’t start recruiting defense, we are going to continue to get torched by teams that recognize how important it is to defend.

gwzimm,
From what I’m hearing, getting a new DC was as much meant to address recruiting issues on defense as it was meant to address scheme issues on defense.

I understand that, but last year’s class was heavily offense oriented. This year, we have 18 recruits, 13 of which are offense. Somebody has to take the responsibility and pay attention to the other side of the ball, where our real problems are.

gwzimm, I think Charlie would agree with you, and that’s why he hired a young DC with big ties to Chicago. I think the former DC put us way behind in the game b/c he’s just not a great recruiter/seller of himself. Weis can sell himself all he wants to D recruits, but they know that the DC and their position coaches will be the ones who spend the most time with them and have the biggest effect on their careers.

It’s just a bummer that, for long-term gain you have to put up with short-term pain. It’s sort of like dieting. Or tattoos.

General Patton knows! The best defence is an offence.

No, the general consensus among coaches is that good defense will stop good offense. Either way, you need balance, and we don’t have it.

ND in 2006 had a prolific offense, but was completely dominated by defenses of the elite teams. That trend will continue, the way our recruiting is going.

CW hired a man he thought would be an excellent DC, but it didn’t work out. Most likely, that did set our Irish back, but I have to believe that our new DC will be an asset. He will have to work with thin numbers due to the lack of recruits on the D-Line. However, I believe one year from now we will see a significant change in the recruiting of defensive players.
