CW hired a man he thought would be an excellent DC, but it didn't work out. Most likely, that did set our Irish back, but I have to believe that our new DC will be an asset. He will have to work with thin numbers due to the lack of recruits on the D-Line. However, I believe one year from now we will see a significant change in the recruiting of defensive players.

No, the general consensus among coaches is that good defense will stop good offense. Either way, you need balance, and we don't have it.

ND in 2006 had a prolific offense, but was completely dominated by defenses of the elite teams. That trend will continue, the way our recruiting is going.

gwzimm, I think Charlie would agree with you, and that's why he hired a young DC with big ties to Chicago. I think the former DC put us way behind in the game b/c he's just not a great recruiter/seller of himself. Weis can sell himself all he wants to D recruits, but they know that the DC and their position coaches will be the ones who spend the most time with them and have the biggest effect on their careers.

It's just a bummer that, for long-term gain you have to put up with short-term pain. It's sort of like dieting. Or tattoos.

I understand that, but last year's class was heavily offense oriented. This year, we have 18 recruits, 13 of which are offense. Somebody has to take the responsibility and pay attention to the other side of the ball, where our real problems are.

gwzimm,
From what I'm hearing, getting a new DC was as much meant to address recruiting issues on defense as it was meant to address scheme issues on defense.

All very clever, but if CW doesn't start recruiting defense, we are going to continue to get torched by teams that recognize how important it is to defend.
