The LSU Series: An Overview, or: “Even Bob Davie Beat LSU”

Notre Dame heads into the Sugar Bowl this season with a 5-4 lead in wins against LSU. I dug that fascinating tidbit up using George Macor’s awesome Notre Dame Football Database.

Here’s the relevant info:

  • Ara went 1-1 against LSU, winning a 3-0 barn-burner and losing an 8-28 shellacking.
  • Faust went 2-1. A 27-9 revenge win, a 30-22 reiteration of the point, and a 7-10 loss of focus.
  • Lou was 0-1 against LSU and will never forgive himself for it, having lost the game 19-21. Such a shame.
  • Finally, Bob Davie(!) tied for best record against LSU as an ND Head Coach with a 24-6 win (and total shock to my Sophomore Year system), a 9-27 loss in the “rematch bowl,” a.k.a. “I knew this was a stupid idea,” and a 39-36 win that made us all wonder how legit our #10 ranking really was.

In essence, this bowl game may be the one and only time we ever hope that Charlie Weis is a little more like Faust and Davie and a little less like Ara and Lou.
