BC Job Opens Up. Oddly, Bob Davie’s Name Still Not Withdrawn From Consideration

Weird. NCState fires Chesty McChesterchest. Out of nowhere, they apparently have snagged Boston College's head coach Tom O'Brien as a replacement. Why a guy would leave one mid-tier ACC team for another is beyond me. We can only assume such a "lateral move" is akin to you or I jumping to a new company just to get away from coworkers/bosses you can't stand. That he's running away from Fredo should surprise nobody.

Weirder. Bob Davie is, somehow, an actual potential candidate for the job.

Thanks to the posters at NDN, who found this nugget via the Boston Globe:

If O'Brien leaves, the next step will be finding his successor, a task that falls to athletic director Gene DeFilippo, who will get the opportunity to make his first major hire at The Heights.

One name that immediately surfaced is former Notre Dame coach Bob Davie, whom DeFilippo coached as a player at Youngstown State. Davie would make a splashy first hire for DeFilippo, but it would likely come at a price far higher than the salary O'Brien reportedly earned.

So many questions:

  1. Bob Davie actually played football? Another living person can actually verify this?
  2. Bob Davie is considered a "splashy hire?"
  3. Bob Davie could command a salary that is more expensive than the one O'Brien was getting?
  4. WTF?
